It’s been a while since we’ve looked at the Land Rover Defender and now is as good a time as any as this sturdy vehicle from the Range Rover stable has received some rather splendid upgrades that move it nearer to its prestigious sibling.

The latest Defender is taking luxurious adventure to a new level with a suite of enhancements across the brand line-up, while the introduction of a new 110 Sedona Edition (seen in red here) and simplified specification levels make it easier than ever to pick the perfect Defender. For example, passenger comfort is taken up a notch with a new Signature Interior Pack and, for Defender 130 clients, the introduction of the luxurious new ‘Captain Chairs Pack’.

More Options

A new seating option for the second row elevates the passenger experience with two individual luxury seats, featuring arm rests either side and comfortable winged headrests, separated by an aisle that offers a gracious walk-through access to the third row. Across the line-up, the introduction of a new D350 power-train also provides a powerful, flexible new engine option.

Being built on the latest and most advanced electrical architecture, all new Defender vehicles are equipped with the very latest security technology available. In addition to its robust, in-built security features, Defender clients now have a choice of S, X-Dynamic SE, X-Dynamic HSE, X and V8 specifications across 90, 110 and 130 body styles. That’s an awful of of extras and it’s interesting to note that Land Rover describe that list of options as ‘simplified’. What must complicated be like? It does however signify that the British brand consider the Defender to be an important vehicle going forward, especially with a fully-electric Range Rover coming soon, of which more later.

More Sedona

The Defender 110 Sedona Red body is complemented by an ‘Extended Black Pack’, with ‘Narvik Black’ Defender script, front grille and skid plates plus 22-inch Gloss Black alloy wheels and a body-coloured spare wheel cover, an exclusive combination for this new edition. The Sedona Red colour was first seen on Defender 130 and the Defender 110 Sedona Edition will be offered for one year only.

Unique to the Sedona Edition, a new optional bonnet decal depicts the topography of Sedona and reflects Defender’s unstoppable go-anywhere capability. The exterior additions are completed by an optional Sedona Red exterior side-mounted gear carrier, ideal for carrying wet or muddy clothing or equipment.

Based on the high specification of Defender X-Dynamic HSE, the Sedona Edition’s interior is available with Ebony Windsor Leather and ‘Kvadrat’ seats for the first time, providing a tough and highly tactile environment. The seats are part of the newly introduced ‘Signature Interior Pack’, which brings a suite of enhancements for greater luxury and attention to detail, and are tactile new material additions and convenient storage pockets for front row passengers.Defender 110

More Defender

The new ‘Signature Interior Pack 3’ combines a comprehensive suite of upgrades to Defender’s interior, across seating and trim finishes, for an even more distinctive environment. Available across all body designs, the Signature Interior Pack is standard on Defender X and V8 specifications, and optional for Defender Dynamic HSE.

The luxurious new individual chairs available for second-row occupants in Defender 130 provide ultimate comfort, spaciousness and versatility, separated from each other by an aisle that gives easy access to the third row. With heating and cooling technology, they’re perfect for first-class adventures anywhere on any terrain, bringing front-row comfort to those travelling in row two. Individual arm rests on each of the two chairs raise comfort levels even further, while the aisle between the seats brings additional space for the centre passenger in row three to stretch out. Twin cupholders on a raised area just behind the front centre console provide extra practicality and create an informal divide between the seats.

The second-row Captain Chairs can also be fitted with winged headrests, like those in the front, for even greater comfort on longer journeys and adventures on Defender X and V8 models. They are also available as part of the Signature Interior Pack on X-Dynamic HSE.

More Power

The company has now introduced a powerful upgrade to the diesel line-up on the Defender with the introduction of a new D350 engine globally, replacing the prior D300. With 345bhp (350PS) and more torque (50Nm increase to 700Nm), the Defender is more engaging than ever with greater flexibility and faster responses, meaning everything from overtaking to towing is even more effortless than ever. The Defender is an important vehicle for this premium brand because it keeps them in touch with their roots, even if this Defender bears little relationship to its predecessor.
