There are lots of great off-road vehicles around; many are just as good on the highway too, but when it comes to excellence the first name on the list is Range Rover. It’s been over fifty years since the first Range Rover was conceived and it has gone from strength to strength since, each evolution dominated by advances in technology.

Range Rover Design

From the outset the word ‘ability’ was key. The latest Range Rover models are as luxurious as ever but with modern build techniques. Today’s Range Rovers are lighter thanks to the use of aluminium in construction and air suspension ensures that passengers remain comfortable no matter how tough the going gets.

The company is constantly seeking ways to improve the specification, design and production of its vehicles, taking into account global environmental concerns. To this end, mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid variants are beginning to emerge with a possibility in the near future of a fully electric version, perhaps for urban drivers. As ever, the level of technology in these vehicles leads the field and the superb ‘Terrain Response’ system keeps these cars going when the rest stop.

Range Rover Cars

The popularity of the original car means that several Range Rover models have been introduced over time, bringing versatility to the range.

Range Rover

The current model remains the biggest and most fully featured in the Range Rover catalogue. Truly, it represents possibly the most renowned expression of automotive travel. This flagship model comes in various iterations and engine options including a V8. For now, petrol and diesel options are retained as well as the aforementioned hybrid models.

The luxurious cabin is hushed and the latest advances in technology ensure that the Range Rover remains up to date; even the base Vogue model is packed with equipment. The car’s strongest point is the off-road ability. Thanks to the ‘Terrain Response 2’ system, the car will automatically adjust settings on the fly to cope with whatever challenge it faces. There’s a new model coming in 2022 with the very latest in safety systems and a mild-hybrid system featuring a big step forward for stop/start technology.

There are some brilliant and more expensive SUV’s from other manufacturers that can do the same job, but always the Range Rover goes that extra mile. Superb.

Range Rover Sport

This slightly smaller model might suit drivers who like a sportier experience. It offers the same luxurious and comfortable interior but unlike its stately sibling offers more agile handling. There are plenty of engine choices and the car retains the off-road attributes the brand is famous for.

Sitting above the smaller family-friendly Evoque in the range, the Velar is a premium SUV with some of the all-terrain features of the top model. Featuring the brand’s ‘Intelligent Driveline Dynamics’ the Velar uses sensors to continually estimate the amount of grip on and off-road and distribute torque where it is needed. Perhaps not so all-conquering as the bigger cars, it nevertheless will tackle the modest terrain that most drivers may encounter while remaining great to drive on the road.

Two litre petrol and diesel mild-hybrid engines feature meaning economy is improved. There’s room for a small family and luggage space is good. The Velar is another winner from Range Rover.

Future Range Rover

As with most other car makers, Range Rover are constantly evolving new ideas for their products to meet global demand for cleaner, greener vehicles. Don’t expect dramatic developments though. Already the masters of high-tech solutions, future Range Rovers will remain recognisable, but new models will be added to meet demand for urban mobility solutions.

New technology includes two highly responsive 10" high-definition touchscreens as standard, allowing use of in-car entertainment while simultaneously interacting with additional features, for increased flexibility and efficiency of use.
