Volkswagen is now one of the giants of the car industry. Home of the all-conquering Golf hatchback, the original ‘people’s car’ manufacturer now offers a wide and varied selection of cars and has recently introduced a sub-brand for its new range of electric vehicles (EV). From the diminutive and curiously named up! to the mighty Touareg SUV, VW have the solution to most motoring requirements.

Volkswagen Design

Cars are becoming our home from home. The world’s changing mobility needs have introduced new words to the Volkswagen design ethos; clarity, simplicity and sustainability. In other words, it is more than just an exercise in exterior and interior design; Volkswagen today are basing the future on user experience. Interface and communication are becoming increasingly important, hence the concentration on how we use our cars and connect with the outside world. The new range of ID-badged EV’s is the start.

Volkswagen Cars

As mentioned, the range of VW vehicles is extensive. Everybody knows the legendary Golf, for example. With useful hatchbacks, sleek saloons and shooting brakes, compact and larger SUV’s on offer, buyers are have plenty of options. These include hybrid and fully-electric options; something for everyone, in other words. Here are some popular choices:

Touareg

The prestige Touareg is the German brand’s flagship car and it is one of the best full-size SUV’s around. Recent models are absolutely packed with the latest technology and the whole package makes for a superb driving experience. In the latest version, the driver is aided by a new display that the company calls the Innovision Cockpit. It’s a 12.0-inch digital instrument display which is also available in other VW vehicles. There’s an even larger display in the centre of the dashboard.

As might be expected, the interior is vast, seating five people comfortably and there’s plenty of luggage space too. For passenger security on the road, Volkswagen have installed the very latest in safety equipment. The Touareg is very refined vehicle, driving smoothly over even bad roads. A range of powerful V6 diesel or petrol engines driving through an eight-speed auto gearbox are offered as well as a powerful plug-in hybrid R model. With all-wheel drive, the Touareg makes a great tow car too.

Tiguan

In a packed sector, the Tiguan has firmly established itself as the best of the mid-sized SUV’s, ideal for the family. There’s a wide choice of engine options from frugal to powerful, with the option of manual or automatic transmissions, and thanks to the long wheelbase there’s plenty of room inside too. Buyers wanting seven seats can opt for the Tiguan Allspace. On the road, the Tiguan is great to drive with all variants offering quiet refinement and a smooth ride.

As indicated, Volkswagen offer a very wide selection of vehicles, too numerous to mention here, including crossover-style cars for the smaller family and cabriolets for the young or young at heart. It’s the new electric cars that are attracting the publicity though.

Volkswagen Future

As is seemingly the case across much of the motor industry, Volkswagen are seeing our automotive future in a new light. Their new strategy for the next decade is ‘Mobility for Generations to Come’. This sweeping statement of intent suggests the world of cars is going to change radically over the next ten years. With electric drive and semi-autonomous cars, VW are going further than most, seeing themselves as changing from vehicle manufacturer to a global software-driven mobility provider.

The range of concept Volkswagen cars is extensive. From the quirky ‘Bulli’ people carrier and an electric beach buggy through to a selection of futuristic sport utility vehicles and sleek town cars, Volkswagen future motoring looks very exciting, assuming these models see the light of day in some form or another.
