Toyota Hilux

Pick-ups trucks are an increasingly popular alternative to regular sport utility vehicles (SUV). No longer industrial units, many improvements to how they drive and what they are like inside has broadened their appeal. Plus, with the latest modern engines, they may well fit into the bracket as a VAT-qualifying car, saving money on tax. The Toyota Hilux is one such and its latest incarnation is the best and most efficient yet.

The Exterior

The Toyota Hilux comes with various cab variations but the most popular will be the full four/five seat crew-cab variety, ideal for transporting the whole family. The shape of any pick-up doesn’t vary very much but in the case of the latest Hilux some changes have been made. The front end has been completely redesigned with a contemporary trapezoidal grille and front bumper treatment, significantly increasing the vehicle’s road presence. Optionally, skid plates, scuff plates, a full front guard and many other items can be ordered on new vehicles. In short, the tough, robust, go-anywhere credentials remain intact.

On the mighty flagship Invincible X variant there’s wheel arch mouldings and fog light surrounds that co-ordinate with the grille surround. Both Invincible and Invincible X models now have LED head lights and tail lights and 18” alloy wheels. The load bed is open and can carry a significant load. Options are available to enclose the bed for security and weatherproofing.

The Interior

All versions of the Hilux, apart from the entry-level Active grade, come with the latest Toyota ‘Touch 2’ multimedia system, with faster software and faster response to touchscreen commands. On the range-topping Invincible X, the functionality includes satellite navigation, optional on other models. Smartphone integration inevitably makes an appearance via either Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, standard from the Icon grade up.

The robustness continues inside. No chintzy add-ons here. The Toyota Hilux interior has a modern, functional interior thanks in part to an 8.0” touchscreen infotainment system that’s standard on all but Active trim. Everything feels very well assembled, and the switches and controls operate with precision. As in most big SUV’s the driver sits high with a great view of the road ahead because the windscreen pillars are slim and it’s easy to judge where the front end is. Because the cab’s rear window is narrow, a reversing camera is standard (except on the entry level model) and all versions get parking sensors.

New and used models have a similar sized cabin and passengers are well served for space and storage. The pick-up ride of old was always going to be bouncy but a modern automotive solution has been found. Toyota’s ‘Pitch and Bounce Control’ automatically adjusts engine torque in response to road surface conditions, reducing body pitching to give more comfortable ride and improved handling. Although the torque adjustment is measured in extremely small quantities, it has a noticeable beneficial effect on passenger comfort.

Driving The Toyota Hilux

Diesel engines rule in the Hilux. Torque is the word here. There’s a choice of a 2.4 litre four-cylinder engine or a more powerful 2.8 litre, version with 201bhp for punchier performance. There’s a six-speed manual gearbox but the more popular six-speed automatic helps get the 2.8 litre version from 0-62mph in a 10.7sec, without compromising the off-road ability.

This is a big vehicle designed to do a job, so buyers should not expect sports car handling on the tarmac. That said, drive appropriately on- and off-road and the Hilux is virtually unstoppable with plenty of ground clearance. All models get selectable four-wheel drive with high and low range gearing for particularly demanding activities and mud-plugging. An added benefit is a switchable rear differential-lock. It’s supplied as standard and is ideal for getting out of sticky situations. There’s also hill descent control amongst a good array of tech and safety equipment.

Is It Reliable?

The Toyota Hilux has a fine reputation for reliability and robustness. Perhaps not quite as sophisticated as a premium SUV, The Hilux offers better-than-average comfort for this type of vehicle thanks to improved suspension components and modern leaf springs at the back. The interior is neat and modern, with a prominent tablet-style panel in the centre for the infotainment and the whole interior is tough enough to stand the rigours of an active lifestyle.
