Porsche Cayenne
With regular and coupé body styles, the Porsche Cayenne is the epitome of what a sport utility vehicle (SUV) should be. Now in its third generation, the Cayenne is even closer to its roots as a Porsche sports car than before thanks to exceptional driving dynamics and smart driver assistance systems. New and used, on- or off-road, this great all-wheel-drive car from the legendary German brand offers premium comfort and greater suitability for everyday use.
The Exterior
Instantly recognisable, usually as it overtakes, the front of the new Cayenne is synonymous with performance. The pronounced ‘power dome’ bonnet emphasises the wings that lead into the redesigned LED headlight array. The lateral trim strip detailing on the central air intake now point outwards, emphasising the width of the vehicle. Large air intakes deliver optimum cooling to the turbo engines.
Although having a compact appearance, the latest version is longer than before despite having the same wheelbase. The side windows are narrower than on the previous model, with a sharper decline towards the rear, in keeping with the low roof line at the back. Both elements make the vehicle appear lower to the ground and more streamlined. The redesigned rear wings further emphasise the 911 sports car genes of this prestige SUV.
With three regular models and now an e-hybrid version, the rear end is a familiar sight, now with a light strip emphasising width. Exclusive to the flagship Turbo variant, the inclusion of an adaptive rear spoiler (that includes an air-braking setting!) is a first in the SUV segment. With lightweight construction and active aerodynamics, on the road this car looks purposeful – and fast.
The Interior
As in every Porsche, the driver and passengers sit low in the vehicle, contrary to mainstream SUVs. Ergonomically designed around the driver, all operating elements can be reached with ease, thanks to the rising centre console which provides the shortest and most ergonomic path from the steering wheel to the most important vehicle functions. The multifunction steering wheel is designed according to the same principle. Delivering an airier interior, a panoramic roof is optional on new orders and luggage space is up to a roomy 770 litres, depending upon how the seats are configured.
The latest Cayenne features increased spaciousness and comfort throughout and features as standard items of equipment that are otherwise only available as an option in most rivals. For example, the fabulously comfortable and grippy sports seats are finished in partial leather as standard in all models. The steering wheel, gear selector, armrests in the doors and the centre console are also finished in leather. The ambient lighting creates a pleasant interior atmosphere in the cabin with insulating glass and an optional ioniser that helps to reduce irritating harmful particles and germs.
Thanks to the Porsche ‘Advanced Cockpit’, the Cayenne offers a special type of interaction between the driver and vehicle. The system is based on the display and operating concept originally developed for the Panamera. The instrument cluster features the traditional Porsche central tachometer flanked by two seven-inch displays.
The driver can control all key functions via three core components: The 12.3” full-HD touch display of the Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system, the multifunction steering wheel to control the on-board computer, and the touch-sensitive Direct Touch Control in the centre console to interact with selected functions. The list of technology on this vehicle is wide, the usual apps feature of course and there’s a Bose surround sound system for musical taste. Step up to the range-topping Turbo and a Burmester system is preferred.

Driving The Porsche Cayenne
Where to start? For safety, there’s an astonishing array of technology. For example, a three-level system of parking assistance provides visual and acoustic information to the driver when manoeuvring and parking. The system uses ultrasonic sensors fitted to the front and rear of the vehicle. Park Assist is optionally available with a reversing camera. This helps with manoeuvring by showing a colour camera image on the PCM screen with dynamic guide lines and distances to potential obstacles. Pedestrian protection and lane assist are included and adaptive cruise control enables semi-autonomous driving.
There’s choice of three model-dependent engines and power outputs driving through an eight-speed Tiptronic automatic gearbox, augmented by column paddles. The six and eight-cylinder turbo engines all have a smaller displacement but deliver more power and torque than their respective predecessor models. The basic engine processes and technologies are all optimised for improved performance and even greater fuel efficiency. A ‘Sports Chrono’ Package is optional on new orders, enhancing performance further. Sophisticated all-wheel-drive is standard.
There is no such thing as a slow Porsche and all models will satisfy, right up to the V8 in the Turbo model. Even the frugal e-hybrid version is faster than most so-called sporting mainstream cars, so performance will never disappoint. Optional air suspension and all-wheel steering may feature but which ever version is selected handling will be of the highest confidence-building order with beautifully weighted steering; this big car can tackle all road types and conditions.
