Porsche cars, like the legendary 911 sports car, do not change, they evolve. So traditional in the past, the company is having to adapt to a digital world that is more connected and more concerned about environmental matters. Car manufacture is changing fast as new technologies affect the automotive sector. The way we buy and drive cars is also changing. The challenge for Porsche is to meet these new standards yet still retain the historic essence of the brand. In short, the German company must make sweeping changes yet retain the Porsche ethos. In this they are succeeding.
Porsche Design
The 911 model is the classic Porsche and even today elements of the original car can still be seen in the design and throughout the whole range of cars. The trick is for the company to remain resolutely Porsche and optimise function while encompassing the electric future and the need for sustainability in production. Over the coming next few years their aim is to reduce and indeed eliminate emissions with hybrid and all-electric models and develop production methods using green energy.
Porsche Cars
Every Porsche car is unique. The brand offer a comprehensive range of cars with something for every motoring need, from sports cars to sport utility vehicles and fully electric saloons. Each model seems to raise the bar further.
911
Somehow Porsche have been able to retain that special 911 experience, retaining that true sports car sensation. New and used Porsche 911 models are available in various forms; coupé, cabriolet and even with all-wheel drive. Performance figures also differ depending on the model selected. The experience though will always be the same.
Environmental concerns have driven the change from normally aspirated engines to a flat six-cylinder, twin-turbo-charged unit the most modest of which still delivers over 400bhp. Whichever is chosen, drivers can be assured of substantial performance, sublime handling and a modern cockpit with a superb driving position and all the latest in automotive technology.
Cayenne
Described as the epitome of a sports car for the whole family, this big car is available as a conventional SUV and also in a coupé-style design. There are various models to choose from, differing in specification, performance and drive, variously featuring a 3.0L V6, a 4.0L V8 and even an e-Hybrid version; all turbo-charged of course and driving through automatic ‘Tiptronic’ gearboxes.
The superb interior is very driver focussed with superb seats that are comfortable yet super supportive. There’s plenty of room for luggage whichever model is chosen. With climate control and the latest in infotainment and safety features, the Cayenne is hard to beat as a car that really does it all.
Macan
The Macan is Porsche’s solution for the world of the compact SUV and it is as good to drive as most out-and-out sports cars from other brands. With figure-hugging seats the interior offers the latest infotainment system, complete with 10.9” touchscreen and ergonomic switchgear.
There’s a choice of four- and six-cylinder engines, all petrol and with automatic gearboxes. The performance is very Porsche-like, even with the base 2.0L variant. Overall, buying a new or used Porsche Macan is a very special experience. It is such a talented car and is also practical with a good sized boot.
Other Porsches
The hugely desirable Panamera and the exciting all-electric and very capable Taycan offer saloon car long-legged performance, spiced with Porsche power. Sports car enthusiasts love the 718 Cayman and Boxster models, recently joined by the astonishingly good Cayman GT4, featuring a very high performance 4.0L V6 engine.
Future Porsche
Future plans for Porsche revolve around the title, ‘Strategy 2030’ which focuses on the sports car of the future. As with most other car makers it is electrification, digitalisation and innovation that are to the fore. This is currently demonstrated by the Taycan, the brand’s first all-electric sports car which highlights future intent.
The company is researching high-performance battery technology using silicon instead of graphite anodes. This is reported to improve battery density and aid fast charging. To further aid the electric sports car future Porsche are planning own-brand fast-charging stations for their customers.
