Mitsubishi Outlander

The Mitsubishi Outlander is a large, family-sized SUV with lots of features that have made it a perennially popular choice, especially the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version. It is available with four-wheel-drive and an automatic gearbox; some versions have seven seats too.

The Exterior

The overall look of the Outlander is sporty and aerodynamic. It’s a safe car as well thanks to the company’s own ‘Dynamic Shield’, a unique design which offers greater protection to the car and passengers. Blind spot monitoring is available as is a rear cross-traffic alert system which warns of traffic approaching from the side when you’re reversing, for example.

Styling is conventional for an SUV. The front features highly efficient LED headlamps which meld seamlessly with the grille for a sleek outline. Daytime running lamps and fog lamps also feature. At the rear, higher placed tail lamps and a high-mounted stop lamp offer better visibility for cars behind and side turn lamps (the indicators) on the outside edge of the door mirrors alert cyclists, pedestrians and other vehicles that the vehicle is turning. Bright trim extends from the front bumper down the side. An attractive styling crease along the body line completes the picture.

The Interior

The large rear doors make getting in and out easy with ample headroom and legroom, with seven seats on some versions. There’s an impressive 781 litres of boot (trunk) space with all the seats in place. Fold the third row down and this increases to a huge 1,608 litre space, which is what you get with the five-seat variant.

There’s a good view from the driver’s seat of this tall car, aided by large door mirrors and big windows. To make life easier both diesel (older used models only) and the current 2.0 litre petrol versions of the Outlander have a reversing camera as standard. Entry-level models feature an 8.0” touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as a standard fit, along with Bluetooth connectivity and a DAB radio. Upgrade to the top specification for satellite navigation and a couple of extra USB ports for rear-seat passengers.

The neat and tidy dashboard is orientated for the driver and the dials are bright and easy to read. Buttons and switches on the centre console have been arranged to cater for ease of use. There’s even a ‘sport’ mode button. Quilted leather, good seats and a sunroof, optionally, feature on higher-spec versions.

Potential buyers wishing to import from the UK to Kenya or New Zealand should know that diesel, petrol and of course plug-in hybrid models are available through the comprehensive MHH International service. Models featured have detailed specifications, aiding choice. The highly-efficient PHEV especially is a VAT-qualifying car, ideal for savings on the purchase price.

Driving The Mitsubishi Outlander

This car is about comfort, first and foremost and the petrol engine is pedestrian; doing the job without any undue excitement. That’s why by far the most popular version is the plug-in hybrid model. This excellent system pairs an electric motor on each axle with a 2.4 litre petrol engine (or 2.0 litre on older models) and a large battery pack. This combination allows the Outlander to drive purely on electric power for up to 28 miles.

Usefully, the battery can be topped up from a standard home socket in just four hours, or a 50kWh fast charger will do the job in 25 minutes. If the electricity depletes the petrol engine kicks in, either charging the batteries or driving the car directly. The Korean brand quote an impressive official fuel economy figure of 139mpg for the PHEV, but that of course will depend upon how and where it was driven and in what conditions.

The steering is commendably light and the four-wheel drive system can shuffle power between the front and rear wheels when sensors deem it necessary. It can also be locked with a 50% split between the two axles to improve traction, on rougher terrain, say.

Should I Buy One?

This is a car that has sold extraordinarily well, particularly the hybrid. Owners report satisfaction with reliability and in use. There is a need to drive within the remit of the PHEV system to get the most efficient fuel consumption, but the Outlander was never designed to be anything other than a good, dependable family car.
