Ford
Historically, the Ford Motor Company has formed the bedrock of what are now known as mainstream cars. They make no apology for that, delivering affordable vehicles that commonly are always good to drive. Consistently one of the world’s largest car makers, Ford was set up in 1903 and the subsequent ‘people’s car’, the Model T, is reckoned to be the first truly affordable car. Over 15 million were sold.
The Blue Oval
The Ford badge is instantly recognisable and the brand’s design philosophy is simple: They put the driver first. This approach enables the company to visualise who will buy and drive any particular model. For example, the latest Ford Fiesta was designed around a virtual young person aged around 28, the digital personification of a profile created from demographic research. It must work: Consistently the Ford Fiesta, throughout all its iterations, is regularly a best seller that appeals to new and used car buyers. It ticks all the boxes for modern suburban lifestyles.
The Cars
Both the Fiesta and Focus have been extremely popular cars for many years, taking care of the needs of small to medium sized families and forming the basis for a comprehensive portfolio of vehicles. Urban drivers are catered for by the Ka, a diminutive but usefully sized city car. Larger groups are catered for by the S-Max sports activity vehicle and the people carriers branded Tourneo, plus the fantastic Galaxy, a smooth and versatile people mover.
Although now withdrawn, useful multi-purpose vehicles like the B-Max and C-Max plus the evergreen Mondeo saloon are still available as used Ford cars. The SUV crowd are catered for by the mid-sized Kuga crossover and the larger Ecosport, both SUV’s. All-wheel drive is available on these vehicles.
SUV fans will be disappointed that the former SUV flagship, the Edge, has recently been withdrawn, but its place in the Ford catalogue has been taken by the smaller, funky Puma; perhaps more in keeping with modern buying taste. The excellent Edge continues to be available as a used Ford. There’s a variety of diesel, petrol and hybrid engines available as ever and the world of Ford is beginning to go fully electric with the introduction of the Mustang Mach-e.
Mach-e Mustang
The Mach-e, although fully electric and very practical retains strong links to the original Mustang's core identity by deploying design elements from the sports car. There’s a choice of four models all with the twin options of a standard or extended battery pack and all- or rear-wheel drive; the latter perhaps appealing more to the driving purist. Power and range then can vary between 268hp to 350hp and 248 miles from a full charge to 379 miles. This is always dependent upon how the car is driven of course. There’s a more powerful GT version now too.
Performance Ford
The USA brand produce more powerful sporting versions of their car, designated ST. The Fiesta, the Focus and the Puma have versions but it is to an American legend that sporting drivers turn: The Mustang. The 5.0 litre V8 engine continues to be retained for now but there’s also a more frugal option with a four-cylinder 2.3 litre ‘ecoboost’ petrol engine. Perhaps not the same cachet as the growling V8, but certainly more environmentally friendly.
Ford Technology
Innovation is at the heart of Ford development. As with most other manufacturers the list of driver assistance and safety features continues to grow. Ford cars are have the usual array of connectivity and innovative infotainment features. Buyers won’t be disappointed as even the base models are very well specified.
The Future Of Ford
These are interesting times for car makers as they race to market with new designs and electrification. The Ford Motor Company is investing billions of dollars in electrification through 2025 as part of its planned route down the electric avenue. The company is electrifying its most iconic products, like the Mach-e Mustang with many more to come in the years ahead, in addition to offering zero-emissions versions of its most popular vehicles.
