BMW 5 Series

The BMW 5 Series is a large executive saloon or Touring (estate) car that fits neatly between the flagship models and the evergreen 3 Series. Now in its seventh-generation, the 5 remains focused on BMW’s traditional values but with the latest technology for multimedia and driver-assistance systems. A hybrid model is now also available, designated the 530e.

The Exterior

The exterior design of the BMW 5 Series has been updated to add a more sporting aspect to the traditional style. As has been widely publicised across the range, the traditional grille now has extra width and height, dropping down further into the front apron and framed by a single-piece surround. MHH International offer the BMW 5 Series, with detailed specifications, for sale for buyers wishing to import from the UK to Kenya, New Zealand and elsewhere.

The slimmer contouring of the headlights brings a modern twist to the standard full LED headlights include two U-shaped daytime driving lights. By opting for the ‘Visibility’ pack, on new cars customers can upgrade to either Adaptive LED headlights with matrix technology or BMW ‘Laserlights’ including ‘high-beam Assistant’, increasing the lighting range up to 600 metres. Larger and more pronounced air inlets, finish the front look.

The rear end too has been modernised with trapezoidal tailpipe finishers and a sportier mounted diffuser on Saloon models. The M Sport package delivers an even sportier look from both the front and rear profiles of the car. It’s the most popular trim level and these models include the M aerodynamics package, M Sport steering wheel and 19” or 20” M Sport alloy wheels.

The Interior

Even the base model is fully featured, but there’s choice of three trim levels: SE, M Sport and M Sport Edition, some with the added Technology Pack. Standard features of the SE include a choice of 17”, 18” and 19” alloy wheels and Steptronic or Steptronic Sport transmission depending on the engine variant. The interior benefits from Dakota leather upholstery, Oxide Silver dark matt trim, Sport leather steering wheel and heated front seats. There’s a large boot (trunk) that’s electronically operated. Additional features as standard for the SE also include front electric lumbar support and Parking Assistant. Comfort, convenience and connectivity are heightened with automatic air conditioning, DAB radio, Connected Package Professional and BMW Live Cockpit Professional. Pretty much comprehensive we think.

The M Sport trim level offers alloy wheels in 18”, 19” and 20”sizes, plus the M aerodynamics package. Inside, there is the M leather steering wheel, front sports seats and a distinctive instrument panel M Sport suspension is standard except on 530e and 530e xDrive (all-wheel-drive) models.

Driving The BMW 5 Series

There’s a choice of powerful engines, two diesels and two petrol plus the hybrid, yet the four-cylinder BMW 520d diesel is perfectly capable of whisking you up to motorway speeds with ease. If more power is needed, the bigger six-cylinder 282bhp 530d has plenty. It’s effortlessly quick and super-smooth. The ultimate must though be the M550i xDrive. With a 523bhp 4.4 litre V8 and a 0-62mph time of just 3.8 seconds, its plenty fast but if such performance isn’t required then the other petrol engine in the range, the 520i, is available.

If efficiency is the name of the game then try the plug-in hybrid 530e which teams a 2.0 litre, four-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor to increase fuel efficiency and reduce emissions. It's capable of an impressive turn of speed, and yet when it is driven in full electric mode, it’s still possible to keep up with the traffic around town especially as the 5 Series can run for 34 miles as an EV alone.

This is of course a very comfortable vehicle, especially with the optional adaptive Variable Damper Control. It’s only available through the optional M Sport Pro Pack but its worth it as it really helps settle the ride. Meanwhile, the range-topping M550i comes with its own bespoke adaptive suspension.

Should I Buy One?

If the requirement is for a smooth, silky, large and reliable saloon or station wagon for business or pleasure then yes, certainly. Some variants are VAT-qualifying cars, meaning there are savings to be made when importing from the UK. View our website and get in touch for more details.
