Bentley
To most motoring enthusiasts, the name Bentley is synonymous with luxury, but there’s lot more to the company than that. From the beginning in 1909, the founding principle was to build “a fast car, a good car, the best in its class”. Today, in the continual pursuit of excellence, the British-built brand remains one of the leaders in automotive luxury across the world. It’s no longer difficult to import cars from the UK to Kenya and New Zealand, for example.
The Cars
Bentley motoring is more than luxury though, it is also about grand touring and sporting performance. No longer the staid carriages of the early 20th Century, these days the range offers sleek, powerful vehicles. As might be expected the Bentley exterior design is immediately recognisable.
There’s the Continental GT: Sharper, lighter, faster and more refined than anything that came before plus the Flying Spur which offers four-door luxury accommodations with four or five seat configurations and a choice of engines as indicated below.
Bentley was first among the select group of prestigious car builders to offer a modern all-round alternative: The Bentayga. The first luxury SUV, the Bentyaga remains perhaps one the fastest, most powerful, most luxurious and most exclusive sport utility vehicles in the world. Powered by an efficient plug-in hybrid power-train and the proven, 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8, or a powerful 6.0-litre 12-cylinder petrol alternative.
The Interior
Bentley interiors are still handcrafted, just as they always have been. From the wood veneers, detailed embroidery and leather inside to the paintwork of the exteriors, it’s all about attention to detail and is why Bentley cars are so sought after.
Allowing for modern sensibilities, the hallmark wood veneer is sourced from sustainable resources. A tree is only used if it fell naturally and another is always planted. Hand-stitched leather lines the interior (Bentley don’t use artificial substitutes) and variously the cars are embellished with aluminium and carbon fibre highlights. The overall effect is luxurious and befitting of these elegant cars.
The Drive
Sedate may have been a word once used about the act of driving a Bentley, but times have changed. For drivers who appreciate prestige and performance in a car then look no further. It is a mistake to think that just because a Bentley is a big car, it must be slow. This is a popular misconception. For example, the Continental GT can power its way from 0-60 in a spectacular four seconds culminating in a top speed of around 204mph. That rivals certain low-slung Italian sports cars. Bentley have succeeded in combining unbridled power, elegance and sophistication.
There’s a choice of model-dependent engines; pick either a four litre V8 or a six litre W12. Neither will disappoint. To maximise fuel economy, the V8 engine can shut down four of its eight cylinders under light-load conditions. The switch is imperceptible.
Knowing the source of power beneath the bonnet, the Bentley driver has nothing to prove. The drive is refined and restrained, until that is the throttle is opened. These cars are designed to cover the ground at speed and in total cosseted comfort. The drive is so good, drivers will probably take the longest route to their destination.
Future Bentley
Like most car makers, the company’s ambition is to be carbon neutral by 2030. Recently Bentley announced their ‘Beyond 100’ project designed to move the brand towards an entire model range powered only by battery from 2030.
Bentley cars then are synonymous with prestige and the highest quality of car building and certain models can be purchased from us here at MHH International. Please get in touch for further information.
