Audi SQ5

Although older models have a perfectly fine petrol engine option, the latest version of Audi’s sporty compact crossover, the SQ5, features a turbo-diesel engine further equipped with a mild-hybrid system. Power and efficiency combined in a compact format.

The Exterior

Based on the mainstream Q5, the SQ5 hunkers low on the standard 20” wheels striking a powerful stance, with added detailing that gives it an even more rugged appearance. Large side air inlets on the front bumpers sit either side of the octagonal Singleframe grille that is specific only to the S models.

At the back a matte aluminium strip is integrated in the lower bumpers, below which are the diffuser and four chromium-plated oval tailpipe trims. As with other SQ models, the SQ5 TDI has a range-topping ‘Vorsprung’ specification level with larger 21” alloy wheels and additional black body detailing that makes the car very distinctive from the standard model.

Matrix LED headlights with are fitted as standard and the rear lights in the ‘Vorsprung’ model also feature digital OLED technology. An interesting little bonus is that when the Audi drive select mode is set to “dynamic” the lights also display a signature pattern that is specific to this setting. Audi technology continues to move forward.

The Interior

It’s an Audi so buyers know what to expect. Buyers wishing to import the latest Audi SQ5 from the UK have a choice of two versions, standard and ‘Vorsprung’, both of which come with luxurious diamond-stitched leather seats. For outright quality this is one of the best interiors money can buy.

Soft, textured plastics abound among the leather and the whole dashboard array feels solid, precise and dependable. The driving position has plenty of adjustments, from the reach and rake of the multi-function steering wheel, to the powered driver’s seat, which includes four-way electric lumbar adjustment.

Although not a huge SUV like the SQ7, this compact crossover still features front and rear parking sensors as standard and a rear-view camera is available as an option that does make sense.

As with all their premium models, Audi's terrific ‘multi-mode interface’ (MMI) has navigation plus the usual infotainment and connectivity system as standard. Wireless phone charging and Audi's Virtual Cockpit digital instrument panel are also included in the package. Accessed by the electrically operated tailgate, the luggage compartment has a basic capacity of 520 litres, increasing to 1,520 litres with the rear seat backs folded down. Roof rails add versatility, and a towing bracket is optional as is a panoramic roof and a premium sound system among many other available extras. Don’t get too carried away with the options list though.

Driving The SQ5

The latest version of the SQ5 features a 3.0 litre V6 turbo-charged diesel engine delivering a glorious 336bhp (341PS) and a mighty 700Nm of torque across a wider engine speed range than previously. This performance SUV is propelled from rest to 62mph in 5.1 seconds and on to an electronically limited top speed of 155mph, making a particularly nice noise in the process.

As a nod to modern concerns, the compromise between performance and efficiency is handled by a hybrid system (MHEV) and electrically powered compressor working in conjunction with the diesel power-plant to improve the engine’s low-end responsiveness. The unit runs off a 48-volt, mild-hybrid electrical system recovering energy during braking and allowing the engine to switch off completely and coast for periods up to 40sec when the driver lifts off the accelerator.

Flicking between driving modes for either comfort or performance, the ‘dynamic’ setting is the place to be for a spirited drive. This mode sharpens the SQ5's accelerator response, adds weight to the steering and makes the gearbox more assertive. The standard fit S suspension with damping control (air suspension is only available on the higher Vorsprung trim), can be stiffened to reduce body lean through corners and the whole drives through a special sports differential (Vorsprung) and a smooth eight-speed automatic gearbox.

Buying An Audi SQ5

Available as a new or used vehicle, the SQ5 is a convincing package with real driving performance coupled with practicality for the smaller family and, as ever, Audi cars are reliable. If the Audi SQ5 fits the bill buyers can import from the UK to Kenya, New Zealand and other destinations through the comprehensive service offered by MHH International.
