Based on the earlier ID4 platform and similar but with a swooping roof, the rear-wheel drive Volkswagen ID5 is a real step forward in electric vehicle (EV) design for 2022. With all the hype that has surrounded the introduction of electric cars globally, buyers are now beginning to see a new maturity in the technology.
On The Outside
Elegant by design, with the new ID5 (and its sibling the sporty ID5 GTX with dual motor all-wheel-drive), the German brand clearly mean business. Despite the addition of a battery pack designed to take this EV over 300 miles on a single full charge (VW’s figure), the car is very SUV-conventional. The lack of any internal combustion parts and all that entails means the design offers outstanding aerodynamics, aiding range. Like all the cars in the ID electric range, Volkswagen’s first e-SUV coupé is based on the Volkswagen ‘modular electric drive matrix’, which allows for more cabin space and minimal overhangs, benefiting handling.
Distinctively with LED technology’ including headlights and LED light strips on the front (which are optional) and rear, the whole works to unmistakably identify the ID5. Many features, like the striking bumper, subtle, curved door panelling and swooping roof line, set the e-SUV coupé apart from the ID.4 model, which, incidentally, was named World Car of the Year. A good pedigree then.
On The Inside
The unique selling point of this very new car has to be the latest software generation which allows for over-the-air updates and activation of additional functions, so that the ID.5 can stay up-to-date for a long time. Innovative assistance systems such as Travel Assist will allow for an even more relaxed and predictive driving experience.
The seats are comfortable and supportive, and thanks to plenty of adjustments for both the seat and steering wheel, finding the ideal driving position should simple. Seat covering materials vary depending on the interior version. The optional ‘Top Sports’ seats are distinguished by perforated ID logos at the top of the backrests. The ultra-modern digital cockpit has a new operating concept with the driver display and high-resolution multimedia system offering bright visuals. An innovative ‘augmented reality’ head-up display (which is optional) within the driver’s field of vision presents additional information. An interesting new part of the software can (via something called Car2X communication) receive data from compatible vehicles in the Volkswagen fleet and signals from infrastructure within a radius of up to 800 metres can be locally interpreted in a fraction of a second, enabling driver alerts about dangerous areas, accidents and stationary traffic. The ID. Light in the cockpit helps by providing visual warnings.
And there’s plenty more technology to play with: The new optional Park Assist Plus with memory function will take care of personalised parking processes on request. Other features offer various improvements including natural voice control (say ‘Hello ID’ and the car responds), but now it is learning-enabled and enables online access to information from the Cloud. For atmospheric interior lighting, the Ambient Lighting feature offers a choice of up to thirty colours. ‘We Connect’ services provide the driver with real-time online traffic information, online map updates, information about charging stations, web radio and so much more. One day, it may be that your car knows more about you than your family.
On The Road
This brilliant new e-SUV coupé from Volkswagen launches this year. The ID.5 will be powered by a 172bhp electric motor in the rear. The dual-motor all-wheel drive of the ID.5 GTX will be powered by an e-motor on the front and rear axles with up to 295bhp, although this is not something you would want to exploit all the time on a long trip if range is an issue.
Systems will be handled by the ‘Electronic Vehicle Dynamics Manager’, a groundbreaking development which is networked with other important control systems, and it is also integrated with the all-wheel-drive control function on the GTX. This brings an entirely new level of sporty driving pleasure, traction and driving safety, we learn.
All ID.5 types are powered by a large, long-range battery. A low drag coefficient of 0.26 (or 0.27 in the ID.5 GTX) increases efficiency and boosts the vehicle’s extensive range. This capability is further supported by the integrated spoiler in the wide-opening, aerodynamically shaped tailgate. Electric cooling air vents in the front of the vehicle open only when necessary, so as to ensure optimal air flow.
Smart in looks and technology, good to drive and handle, the Volkswagen ID5 should be on the favourites list when it comes to buying an EV. Find out more about this car and our comprehensive service. MHH International is here to put you in the driver’s seat.
