The popular and reliable German car maker Volkswagen have enjoyed some decent success with their ‘ID’ range of electric vehicles (EV). The standard models have been around for a while now and the brand have clearly decided to give the model range a little extra refreshment to their best-selling ID.3 and ID.7 electric vehicles (EV) by adding a performance model, the GTX, as range-toppers.
ID.3 GTX
Pace, power and miles aplenty, that’s the GTX catchphrase for the smaller model and that seems to be the case as the new all-electric ID.3 GTX Performance has all that going for it. The top-of-the-ID.3-range newcomer adds some pulse-quickening style and extra performance on to the already successful Pro and Pro S versions of the car.
This new variant is equipped with an 84 kWh gross (79 kWh net) battery that delivers the equivalent of 321bhp (326 PS / 240 kW) and 545 Nm of lovely torque directly through the rear wheels. That’s enough for some lively performance, enough in fact to power this sporty EV from zero to 62 mph in just 5.7 seconds. Add into the mix some sports suspension, genuinely progressive steering and Volkswagen’s own adaptive chassis control system for assured and dynamic road handling at all times. All of this is standard equipment.
All this extra go doesn’t come at the expense of practicality however, as the car can still manage up to 369 miles (594 km) of range on the official cycle. This will vary dependent on terrain and conditions of course, but for most drivers that’s plenty on a single charge. The battery can be charged from 10 to 80 per cent in just twenty six minutes at rapid DC stations of up to 185 kW, while domestic charging can be completed at up to 11 kW AC.
On The Outside
Other highlights that set this model apart from the crowd include the GTX-specific front bumper (fender), complete with a new independent black air intake in a diamond-style design and new daytime running lights. High-gloss black body elements, large 20 inch ‘Skagen’ black alloy wheels, newly designed side sills and a refreshed lower area at the rear with diffuser complete the new model’s eye-catching exterior.
On The Inside
The sporty theme continues on the inside, where premium ‘ergoActive’ sports seats that combine fabric with ‘leatherette’ sit alongside red decorative stitching, a GTX multi-function steering wheel and a GTX-specific cockpit surface. Metallic paint, an excellent Harman Kardon sound system for your tunes plus an augmented-reality head-up display all come as standard to enhance the overall driving experience.
The Drive
The ID.3 GTX Performance is, you might say, the electric counterpart to the internal combustion Golf GTI Clubsport. There is a difference of course, an electric drive and a turbocharged petrol engine each have their own unique character but the ID.3 GTX Performance and the Golf GTI Clubsport share the same driving characteristics when they accelerate. This is the modern world and
Volkswagen is transferring their almost 50-year tradition of its compact GT models into the world of electric mobility, so driving pleasure continues to be guaranteed.
The ID.7 GTX
The new ID.7 GTX and ID.7 GTX Tourer models sprint to 62 mph in just 5.4 and 5.5 seconds respectively thanks to an additional front motor (there’s one at the back on all models) which ups the power to 335bhp (340 PS / 250kW). At the same time range improves to 359 miles (578 Km) and 366 (589 Km) miles, respectively, with fast 200 kW charging in as little as twenty six minutes, again on a fast charger.
With increased performance from this dual-motor technology and dynamic exterior styling, the GTX adds a performance edge to what has already proved to be an incredibly well-received and award-winning package. These GTX models have the same 86 kWh (net) battery as ID.7 Pro S Match derivatives, but the addition of the front motor results in a power increase of 53bhp (54 PS / 40 kW), over the standard ID.7 models. This also means that ‘4MOTION’ all-wheel drive is available on the ID.7 and ID.7 Tourer for the first time.
In fact, the ID.7 GTX is currently the most powerful electric vehicle from Volkswagen, capable of powering from a standstill to 62 mph in just 5.4 seconds. The ID.7 GTX Tourer completes the same sprint in 5.5 seconds, a tad unexpected from a car that also offers 605 litres of luggage space with five people on board (when the rear seats are in the cargo position).
On The Outside
The GTX has its own exclusive look. Both new models have the same high levels of luxury and equipment that existing ID.7 drivers enjoy, with enhanced specification over the Pro Match trim that includes, again, 20 inch ‘Skagen’ alloy wheels and GTX exterior styling. Other standard features include ‘IQ.LIGHT’ LED matrix headlights with illuminated Volkswagen logos at the front and rear, unique GTX daytime running lights and Volkswagen’s ‘adaptive chassis control system’ complete with driving profile selection.
On The Inside
The premium quality car offers ventilated and heated massage seats in the front plus heated rear seats, a Harman Kardon sound system, an augmented-reality head-up display, GTX-specific interior styling and Volkswagen’s IDA voice assistant with integrated ‘ChatGPT’. Park Assist Pro, which lets drivers control parking procedures using a smartphone, is among a long list of attractive options that are available for both models.
