Old-school purists may in the past have shuddered at the thought that one day in the future Porsche vehicles would not only go off-road but also be powered by electricity. Well, that day has come and most modern motorists don’t mind at all. BY 2025, we learn, half of all the new vehicles from the German sports car brand will have an electrified drive – either fully electric or plug-in hybrid. The future, it seems, belongs to electric mobility. In 2019 Porsche announced their first electric vehicle (EV), the gorgeous Taycan; now they have taken it a stage further by announcing the Taycan Cross Turismo.
About The Cross Turismo
The sports car manufacturer is expanding the company’s portfolio of all-electric sports car range with the addition of this versatile off-road version. thereby continuing the systematic pursuit of its path towards ‘sustainable mobility’. The Taycan Cross Turismo benefits from an innovative electric drive with 800volt power. The Performance Battery Plus, which has a total capacity of 93.4 kWh, is fitted as standard. A new and high-tech chassis offers all-wheel drive and adaptive air suspension, ensuring, they say, uncompromising driving dynamics off-road. There’s more headroom for rear-seat passengers and more than 1,200 litres of load capacity, loaded through the large tailgate at the rear. Essentially, this is an EV that can do it all.
The Taycan Turbo S Cross Turismo
Four derivatives of this intriguing vehicle are available immediately at launch, which will be sometime this coming Summer, culminating in the top of the range, the Turbo S Cross Turismo. This ultimate version will deliver 616bhp (625 PS)with added ‘overboost power’ launch control upping the ante to a blistering 750bhp (761 PS). More than enough, you will probably agree. In fact, acceleration is breathtaking in launch mode: 0-62mph (0-100 km) in an astonishing 2.9 seconds, whisking the car to a top speed of 155mph (250 km/h). The range is quoted as being somewhere between 241 miles (388km) to 260 miles (419km). Obviously the keen driver won’t see this figure if the launch control is applied too often, but it is a potentially realistic mileage if driven sensibly.
The Looks
The Taycan Cross Turismo is defined by the sporty roofline (see images) sloping downward to the rear. This is called the “flyline” by the Porsche designers, although they remain tight-lipped as to why. Suffice to say that it has nothing to do with fishing. They have also come up with a purpose designed bicycle carrier for the back!
Off-road design elements include wheel arch trims, unique front and rear lower aprons and side sills. As part of the Off-Road Design package, the Cross Turismo has special flaps at the corners of the front and rear bumpers and at the ends of the sills. These make for a striking exterior as well as providing protection from stone impacts. A sensible idea.
Here at MHH International we are understandably very excited about this astonishing Porsche. Don’t expect it to be at the budget end of the price range though: Word has it that, on home territory in Germany, the starting price is around 93,000 Euros. As mentioned, it’s launching this Summer. Form an orderly queue.
