Swedish premium car maker Volvo is opening the order books for the 2026 Volvo EX90, now enhanced with hardware and software upgrades. Powered by the company’s new 800-volt electric system, the EX90 can charge even faster, while a core computer upgrade enables new and improved safety, collision avoidance and driver support features. It is, after all, a Volvo, so buyers know that safety is a priority for this prestige brand.

The EX90, the electric equivalent of the robust XC90 but with very different underpinnings, is a full size SUV that, for the family or long distance traveller, is an electric vehicle (EV) worthy of consideration. The EX90 offers a comfortable ride, a longer range than many other seven-seat EVs, and loads of luxuries as standard. Combine that with a roomy interior and exceptional safety performance and you get a very strong package that meets all the modern standards.

The Exterior

It goes without saying that an EV will go further faster if it is aerodynamic. Aerodynamic drag is the enemy of efficiency. The Volvo designers, no doubt in their obligatory black roll-neck sweaters, have thought it through to the point that the EX90 features a very slippery, smooth and streamlined surface.  Clearly, the design of the Volvo EX90 maximises the ambition to optimise its driving range, concentrating on cutting drag and wind resistance.

The sleek and rounded front, as seen in our images, combined with elements such as flush glazing and door handles, ensures that air flows uninterrupted towards the rear. These are things that affect the so-called drag coefficient with which, thanks to these exterior design choices, the Volvo EX90 achieves a very low drag coefficient of 0.29, amazing for a large, seven-seater SUV.

The Interior

Typically Volvo, the very premium interior is simple, pared-back and very calming, with a variety of trims, colours and upholstery available. Fit and finish is to a high standard and the seats, either with standard ‘faux-leather’ or the option of wool covered seats are great for long trips. A comfortable ride is assured, thanks also to a superb suspension system.

The centrally mounted and portrait-oriented 14.5 inch touchscreen dominates the dashboard and is joined by an 8.0-inch display in front of the driver. Old-school types will also like the inclusion of buttons and knobs for certain functions. This driver’s screen shows speed, charge levels and range separately to the main display, while a head-up display means you don’t even have to take your eyes off the road to see your speed and travel maps.

Additionally, the 2026 EX90 will now come with an electro-chromic panoramic roof, first introduced on the new, recently launched Volvo ES90 (see here). This new roof lets you adjust the glass transparency, helping to reduce glare or boost privacy at the touch of a button.

So What Else Is New?

Well, in addition to the sunroof, new features include connected safety alerts for slippery roads, hazards ahead and accidents ahead, along with the integration of automatic e-call functionality with ‘Emergency Stop Assist’ (ESA).

ESA is designed to bring the car to a controlled stop in its lane if the driver fails to respond to attention or hands-off warnings, for example due to sudden illness. Once the car is stationary, the new e-call feature will automatically connect the car to an emergency call centre linked to Volvo Cars. The centre can then speak with the occupants and contact emergency services if needed.

Other new features include expanded automatic emergency steering functionality in darkness, along with ‘Park Pilot’ assist for parallel parking. New technology has also enabled Volvo to offer the ability to push safety and performance even further through data, software and the now ubiquitous AI.

More Power, Faster Charging

Compared to the previous model year’s 400V system, the new 800V architecture reduces heat generation during charging, enabling faster charging speeds. The charging performance is further improved by the prestige brand’s in-house developed battery management software. Using a smart algorithm, it works in tandem with the 800V system to optimise charging. What that means is that the tech makes it significantly faster than previously possible and adding up to 155 miles (250km) of range in just 10 minutes, depending upon local circumstances.

On top of that, the 800V technology delivers more power for faster acceleration, while using energy more efficiently. Plus, the shift reduces material use, which helps lighten the weight of both the battery and the electric motors. It’s Volvo’s most advanced electric system yet.

Driving

As ever, there’s a choice of power options. For most users the single motor rear-wheel-drive EX90 is all most drivers really need. It has a slightly smaller battery but only eight miles less range than the optimum for the two versions of the four-wheel drive EX90 which are also available.

On the road the most powerful model is able to sprint from 0-62MPH (100KPH) in just 4.9 seconds, with the standard car taking a scant second more and a top speed limited to 112MPH (180KPH). For such a big car, handling is very well controlled with only a slight amount of roll; excellent for a car built for comfort rather than speed.
