The prestigious new Mercedes-AMG GT 63 4MATIC+ Coupé (to give the car its full title) is now available to order in ‘Premium Plus’, ‘Performance’ and ‘Launch Edition’ specifications. Highlights include a glorious and hand-assembled 4.0 litre V8 bi-turbo engine that produces 577bhp (585 PS / 430kW) and no less than 800Nm of lovely torque. The traffic light sprint from 0-62 mph is entirely possible in just 3.2 seconds, with a top speed of up to 195mph. That should be sufficient for most drivers. Most importantly, this new model just looks spectacular. For a new purchase expect to pay around GB £165,000 in the UK.
The GT offers fully variable 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive, ‘Active Ride Control’ suspension with semi-active roll stabilisation, active rear-axle steering and active aerodynamics and all are standard fit. Very active indeed then but crucially this car remains well suited for everyday use, with a two-plus-two seating layout on Premium Plus and Performance models and improved all-round visibility. Here’s more:
On The Outside
The exterior design of this new GT Coupé combines typically Mercedes-Benz design with the sporty DNA of of the brand’s performance department, AMG. A long wheelbase, short overhangs and a steeply inclined windscreen with black-painted frame make the GT appear compact and low, while the AMG proportions such as the long bonnet and the rear passenger compartment describe the appearance of a luxurious yet practical sports car.
Premium Plus models are equipped with 21 inch five-twin-spoke forged alloy wheels in matte black and both ‘AMG Night’ packages. Package I introduces high-gloss black finishes for components such as the front splitter, mirror housings, side sill panels, rear apron and tailpipe trims while ‘Night’ package II adds black chrome finishes for the radiator grille, all model badges and the Mercedes-Benz star mounted on the rear of the vehicle.
The GT Coupé Performance variant is fitted with 21 inch cross-spoke forged alloy wheels in matte black and both ‘AMG Night’ packages, while the Launch Edition features 21 inch cross-spoke forged alloy wheels in matte ‘Techgold’, as well as the ‘Night package II’ and ‘AMG Exterior Carbon’ package. Bought new, the car is available in eleven colours and the lights are of course digital LEDs.
The Performance and Launch Edition models are equipped with high-performance ceramic composite braking systems, with bronze-painted callipers and brake discs measuring 420 × 39 millimetres at the front and 360 × 32 millimetres at the rear. The Premium Plus is fitted with ventilated and perforated composite brake discs measuring 390×36 mm at the front, with yellow-painted 6-piston fixed callipers, and 360 x 26 mm at the rear, with single-piston floating callipers. In short, this car stops as well as it goes.
On The Inside
On the inside the Mercedes-AMG GT Coupé is even more versatile than ever before, we’re told. Premium Plus and Performance models feature a two-plus-two seating layout; the rear seats making it more suitable for everyday use, offering space enough for tall children (or small adults) with fixings for child safety seats. When this additional seating is not needed, the backrests can be folded down, significantly expanding the luggage compartment to a volume of up to 675 litres, highlighting the Grand Touring aspect of this car.
Up front, the standard sports seats offer outstanding comfort and lateral support. AMG Performance seats with integrated headrests are fitted to Performance and Launch Edition models. In Sport, Sport+ and RACE driving modes, the side bolsters automatically tighten to provide optimum support at all times. For keen drivers this is a great feature, holding the riders firmly in position and eliminating that ‘rock and roll’ discomfort.
All models feature Nappa leather upholstery. In Premium Plus and Performance models, customers can specify Nappa leather in a variety of colours. Launch Edition models feature Nappa leather upholstery in combination with microfibre in black with yellow or red stitching, optionally.
Naturally, the Coupé features the latest-generation MBUX infotainment system, operated via an 11.9 inch portrait-format touchscreen, with extensive AMG-specific content. For example in the AMG Performance menu, the driver can access a wide range of data at the touch of a finger: from power, torque and lateral acceleration to the power distribution of the all-wheel drive and the current vehicle status, including tyre pressure and fluid temperatures.
The driver can also view the front and rear wheel axles and the pressure in the semi-active roll stabilisation system. ‘AMG Track Pace’, a great new addition that is essentially a virtual race engineer, is also a standard feature. This software is part of the MBUX infotainment system and records over 80 vehicle-specific data points (e.g. speed, acceleration, steering angle, brake pedal actuation) ten times per second while driving on a racetrack. The ‘Telemetry’ screen can display 40 parameters live, up to four at a time. Note that this mentions ‘race track’. This feature is for folk who like to test their limits on a circuit and not on the highways!
Further standard equipment fitted to all AMG GT Coupé models includes: head-up display, Burmester Surround Sound system, Parking package with 360° camera, ‘Keyless Go’, automatic climate control, 64-colour ambient lighting, wireless device charging, Blind Spot Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Traffic Sign Assist and Active Brake Assist. This car comes fully loaded with the latest safety equipment.
On The Road
Anyone who has driven Mercedes GT models will know what to expect and this new car improves yet again on all driving aspects. The handling will be brilliant thanks to extensive active aerodynamic elements. The active aerodynamic profile, concealed almost invisibly in the underbody in front of the engine, creates a Venturi effect that draws the car into the road and reduces front axle lift by around 50 kilograms at 155mph. On Premium Plus models, a retractable spoiler is integrated into the vehicle’s silhouette. It can, we understand adopt five different angles above 50mph depending on driving conditions, thus ensuring this car will offer handling that is a match to the looks and power on offer.
