The new model Ford Explorer is a mid-sized SUV (sport utility vehicle), or crossover as this sector is now called and it’s in the vanguard of Ford’s foray into the world of fully-electric motoring.
Very American in style, it’s shortly to make its European debut. The electric Explorer, they say, offers an outstanding digital experience with a fully loaded infotainment system, 14.6 inch movable screen (of which more later), wireless app integration and advanced driver assistance. Ford’s new EV will take longer road trips in its stride, charging from ten to eighty per cent in just 25 minutes at a fast charging station.
Designed for family adventures, the Explorer offers clever cabin storage which is roomy, features a private locker no less, plus there’s a 17 litre central console which provides stowage for large item; a laptop for example. Here’s more:
The Adventure Begins
This crossover is the company’s first electric vehicle to be built in quantity and is the first in what will be an increasing number of cars to complete the company’s planned all-electric portfolio of passenger vehicles by 2030.
The Explorer features an aerodynamic exterior captures the spirit and assertive style which has its roots in Ford’s typically American truck style and, as it’s electric, features a strong wrap-around “shield” design in lieu of a traditional grille. It is certainly a striking looking vehicle and this futuristic exterior styling is matched by an ultra-modern interior with premium materials and features such as sculpted sport seats and a sophisticated soundbar more typical of recent revolutionary concept cars than established family cars.
The fully loaded electric Explorer offers an outstanding digital experience, helping drivers and passengers stay connected and comfortable on the move. Features include a ‘SYNC Move 2’ supersized movable touchscreen set in portrait format and which can be moved into to three different positions according to driver preference for ease of viewing. It’s a neat idea. Additionally there’s a five inch display for the driver, a connected infotainment system with audio tailored to the interior, plus the very latest in wireless app integration and advanced driver assistance technology.
The adventure-ready design already alluded to combines storage of 450 litres in five-seat mode to help Ford’s newest electric vehicle support exploring the city and way beyond. The 17 litre console between driver and front-seat passenger can hold a 15-inch laptop, combining with a private locker behind the touchscreen to hide valuables and a hands-free powered tail gate for ease of loading luggage and holiday paraphernalia.
The Ford Explorer also offers a raft of features to ensure drivers and passengers are as refreshed and ready to go when they have reached their destination as when they set out. Comfort-boosting standard specification includes heated front seats and steering wheel and even a massaging driver’s seat. There’s climate control that allows driver and front passenger to choose their own temperature and of course standard keyless entry and seating for five across two rows.
Advanced driver assistance systems include ‘Assisted Lane Change’ for smoothly and safely changing lanes at the push of an indicator stalk, and Clear Exit Assist that provides warnings of approaching cyclists before opening doors in busy city centres.
The Charge
All this comes together with the ability to fast charge from 10 to 80% in just 25 minutes and access to 21,000 charge points in the UK on Ford’s Blue Oval Charging Network. By 2024, Explorer customers will have access to more than 500,000 charging points in 25 countries across Europe.
Charging can be quick and easy, whether en route or at home although charging results may vary based on peak charging times and battery state of charge, as with any EV. The Explorer can help find the most convenient pit stops on the road, should they be required. Charging at home can be scheduled to use cheaper electricity and energy tariffs, where available, to deliver a full battery and pre-warmed cabin for early starts. Available in two highly specified trim versions, either Select or Premium, the new all-electric Ford Explorer can be ordered from later this year.
The Drive
The entry-level model has 168bhp (170PS/125kW) from a single electric motor that drives the rear wheels. Next up the mid-range option boosts power to 282bhp (286PS/210kW). The range-topper and likely to be the most popular variant delivers 335bhp (339PS/250kW) by adding a second motor that powers the front wheels; all-wheel drive in other words. The official range, depending upon model and how it is driven, is up to a decent 310 miles.
