Not currently available as new (although a hybridised version is on the way - see below), the Mercedes-Benz AMG C63 is available to import used from Japan (or the UK) to Kenya, New Zealand and other global destinations. There’s still a chance then to glory in the sound of a true V8 fused with a fine prestige car from the German brand.
For 2023 (the car is expected to be announced at the end of 2022 although which countries will be getting it is yet unknown) will be powered by a 2.0 litre turbocharged four-cylinder hybrid set-up, delivering, it is alleged, about 500bhp. Word is that it will offer the same astonishing performance as the existing model featured here, but will it maintain that old-school V8 character? We await cautiously. In the meantime it is known that to help mitigate the dreaded turbo lag, an electrically powered turbocharger system will be used. Right, that’s the future sorted, now back to the present model:
On The Outside
The exterior of the Mercedes-Benz C63 underscores the brand identity of the C-Class performance models, identified specifically by the AMG-specific radiator grille trim with vertical louvres in high-gloss chrome. Aerodynamics is the name of the game here with a transverse fin in the outer air inlets, plus a front apron in A-wing design. Further, this gives the car a more aggressive, wider look over the standard C-Class.
The side view highlights eye-catching features like the sporty side skirts plus aerodynamically optimised AMG light-alloy wheels. The rear view, too, fits the bill with two twin-tailpipes either side of the subtle under-bumper diffuser.
On The Road
Fundamentally this is a firm-riding car as it should be with all that V8 muscle, yet comfort is surprisingly good, and the ride quality is impressive. The best of both worlds, if you like. Certainly, the quality suspension seems to deal with road imperfections very well and body control is well within limits, helping to tame that almost 500bhp on offer.
On the go, the seven speed automatic transmission is brilliant; one of the best around. Choose the Sport+ mode and the paddle-shift changes are lightning fast, the bellowing exhaust note adding an automotive musical accompaniment as the C63 races to 62mph in just 4.1 seconds.
For even more excitement choose the ‘S’ model as that comes with a ‘Race’ mode which sharpens engine and transmission responses to their highest, increasing engine idle speed and cancelling the start/stop system. Don’t get carried away though!
