There have been some fine premium electric vehicles (EV) so far in 2025 and there’s more to come for 2026.
Since its launch in 2019, the Tesla Model 3 has consistently been one of the most popular electric cars. Now, thanks to its latest round of updates, it’s still the one to beat if you're looking for an electric car which matches up to the best from the executive car catalogue. However, there’s an EV coming up fast on the rails which is likely to displace all the current front runners, but more on that later.
The BMW i7 is a prestige model that has scored highly with buyers and for good reason. It is one of the best luxury limousines on sale, offering technology, comfort and convenience in equal measure. It has a stunning interior and while the single motor version is quick, the twin motor model is ballistically fast. BMW have not though rested on their laurels though because the large and luxurious sport utility vehicle (SUV), the iX, is not only premium quality, it also has an admirable range of up to 426 miles. That’s impressive for a big car.
The prestige German-made Porsche Taycan has long ranked as a favourite and is one of the best luxury cars on sale, offering technology, comfort and convenience in equal measure. Even the base version is quick and this car rates as one of the best drivers’ EV’s available. The bigger battery variant will deliver nearly 400 miles; as long as it’s not pushed to the limit, obviously.
Hyundai Ioniq 6 N:
Now, there are electric cars and there are electric cars. The Hyundai Ioniq 6 N, to give this premium electric vehicle its full name, is a track-focussed rocket that also works as a daily driver and you can’t say fairer than that. The letter ‘N’ is the signifier here and it is appearing on several versions of Hyundai products. This South Korean car manufacturer seemingly goes from strength to strength and on this EV they have combined cutting-edge technology with a bold design, setting a new benchmark for driver engagement in high-performance electric vehicles. It’s comfortable, refined and practical enough for everyday use but, and this is important, it is fun.
A Bold Exterior
The Ioniq 6 N makes a bold statement with its ‘Performance Blue Pearl’ exterior finish and widened bumpers (fenders), underscoring its high-performance identity. Standard 20 inch forged alloy wheels complete the aggressive stance, while drivers seeking a personalised touch can enhance their vehicle with ‘N performance’ parts; track-inspired upgrades designed for both street and circuit use. There’s a choice of optional colours but that ‘Blue Pearl’ is a bit special.
A Premium Interior
Inside, the cabin is optimised for high-performance driving. A black monochrome colourway with ‘Performance Blue’ accents sets the tone, complemented by bucket seats upholstered in ‘Alcantara’ suede and genuine leather for optimal support during spirited driving.
Every detail appears to reinforce driver engagement. An exclusive ‘N Pasubio’ steering wheel, complete with a top-dead-centre mark, features dedicated ‘N1/N2’ buttons for rapid mode selection, while ‘N-exclusive’ metal pedals ensure precision braking and stable pedal response. An ‘N knee support’ pad enhances comfort during cornering, and additional physical buttons provide intuitive, driver-focused control. Who would have though that a single letter could mean so much.
Premium touches such as welcome lighting on the front ‘N’ logo and real aluminium ‘N’ emblems elevate the cabin’s motor-sport-inspired character, creating an environment that blends cutting-edge performance with everyday usability.
At the heart of the experience is ‘N Active Sound+’, a dynamic audio system that enriches the driving experience with immersive, tailored soundscapes. Powered by a stereo sound source and a sophisticated ‘Acoustic Design Processor’, this system offers a choice of sound modes – from the motor-sport-inspired ‘Ignition’ to the nostalgic rhythm of ‘Evolution,’ and the futuristic tones of ‘Lightspeed’; all to suit the driver’s mood or environment.
The Drive
This spectacular EV is engineered for exceptional cornering precision with advanced suspension geometry and aerodynamic features designed for high-speed stability. With no less than 641BHP (650 PS) and 770 Nm of torque plus some advanced features including ‘N Battery’ and ‘N Track Manager’, the Ioniq 6 N is designed to deliver thrilling racetrack performance and is blisteringly quick in a straight line. Plus, it handles superbly. It is, as the British say, one very sorted car.
N Battery
To meet the rigorous demands of high-performance driving, the Hyundai Ioniq 6 N features the advanced ‘N Battery’ system. Optimised for temperature management, it adapts seamlessly to drag, sprint and endurance scenarios. Integrated conditioning functions enhance performance longevity, while improved thermal management and an upgraded coolant heater significantly reduce conditioning time.
Performance
Here’s where it gets even more interesting and is worth examining: We’ve established that the 6 N is designed to deliver unparalleled driving excitement but now we learn that it is guided by Hyundai N’s three-pillar philosophy: ‘Corner Rascal’, ‘Racetrack Capability’ and ‘Everyday Sports Car’. It’s all about the driving:
Corner Rascal
Ioniq 6 N delivers exceptional cornering precision through advanced suspension geometry and a re-engineered chassis for superior handling. Stroke-sensing Electronically Controlled Suspension (ECS) dampers and a lowered roll centre work together to enhance grip and stability, ensuring confidence-inspiring performance on undulating roads and demanding circuits.
The revised suspension geometry not only lowers the roll centre for improved high-speed stability but also incorporates new bushing applications to balance sharp handling with refined comfort. An electronic limited slip differential (e-LSD) actively manages wheel torque to boost traction and overall performance. Complementary upgrades to axle stiffness, steering precision, and mount damping further reduce vibration while enhancing ride comfort and refinement across varied surfaces.
Race Track Capability
If a little track action appeals the 6 N EV is meticulously crafted to excel on the racetrack, delivering an electrified experience that seamlessly blends power, control and advanced technology. Its ‘integrated power electronics’ system delivers significantly higher efficiency and output than the standard model, unlocking maximum performance. At the front, a high-efficiency, high-output drive system combines motor, reducer and inverter, while the rear motor serves as the primary drive unit for enhanced traction.
This car accelerates from 0 to 62MPH (100 km/h) in just 3.2 seconds (with ‘N Launch Control and some supercars can’t match that) and reaches a top speed of 160MPH (257 km/h). As mentioned, the Ioniq 6 N boasts ‘N e-Shift’, Hyundai N’s innovative shift control feature that replicates close gear ratios inspired by motor-sports, amplifying responsiveness and driver engagement.
The system works in harmony with key performance features such as ‘N Launch Control’, ‘N Drift Optimiser’, ‘N Grin Boost’ (yes, really) and ‘N Torque Distribution’, giving the driver maximum control and ensuring this electric vehicle performs at its peak under even the most demanding track conditions. Drivers can elevate their racetrack performance further with ‘N Track Manager,’ an intelligent tool that enables custom track design, lap-time monitoring, and real-time insights – including ghost car visuals for comparative analysis.
While the 6 N delivers exceptional performance on the track, it is also a refined, comfortable everyday companion. Designed to be as comfortable as it is thrilling, the car features a finely balanced suspension and chassis system that maintains ride comfort without compromising dynamic handling. Whether navigating urban streets or commuting on long highways, the Hyundai Ioniq 6 N achieves a seamless transition between electrified exhilaration and everyday practicality.
