In automotive terms the class of vehicle known as a ‘sport utility vehicle’ or SUV, has become somewhat ubiquitous on our roads. Every car manufacturer has cars of this type, large, medium and small, in their range and why not? Buyers seem to like them. It all started with tough, rugged off-road style vehicles that could do pretty much anything asked of them.

Time, though, has moved on. By and large the citizens of the world are no longer required to forage in the wild; we now drive to the mall and what better way to command the road than by driving in an SUV. That’s because they can accommodate the family and a whole day’s shopping or take everyone on an outdoor adventure, so they remain at heart ‘utility’ vehicles.

Even the prestige car makers are in on the act; who would expect Ferrari to build the big, powerful Purosange, for example. Here then is a short list of premium SUV’s that are among the most popular in 2025:

Porsche Cayenne

MHH International featured the traditionally-powered and hybrid variants model back in 2024 (see it here) and Porsche have now released more details of the new Cayenne Electric. This exciting new development will please electric vehicle (EV) users. By the time you read this, the prestige German car maker will have formally announced this new car and you’ll be able to read a full review on these pages shortly. Here’s what we know so far:

We are promised outstanding driving dynamics (as should be expected from Porsche), excellent long-distance comfort, uncompromising off-road capability and the efficiency of modern e-mobility. We learn that this car is based on Porsche's latest electric vehicle architecture and sets new standards in the SUV segment, both in terms of performance and charging capability as well as comfort and digital connectivity. The Cayenne Electric complements the existing range of combustion-engined and plug-in hybrid variants; it’s not a replacement.

Best SUV Rolls Royce Cullinan

Rolls Royce Cullinan

This magnificent SUV has been revised for 2025, introducing changes that aren’t fundamental to its mechanics but rather the styling, interior and technology, all of which that have been tweaked to keep the model updated.

Perhaps the biggest changes are most obvious outside, where the grand styling has been given a more distinctive look around the traditional pantheon grille. The headlights are slimmer and feature a much larger daytime running light signature that flows down the front of the car. The lower bumper is also new and this is the first Rolls-Royce in a very long time to diverge from the typical Rolls Royce design ethos.

Further, if you thought the interior of the car couldn’t be bettered, you were wrong. This latest iteration takes luxury to the next level, yet this is not a some stodgy, neoconservative cabin. It is superbly equipped for sure but right up the minute with technology and innovation. This is quite a car and you can read the whole MHH International review on this page.

Range Rover Sport

Refreshed this year, we have chosen the Sport over the standard Range Rover simply because it is more fun, a more enjoyable drive. Certainly the Range Rover is a prestige vehicle in its own right but the Range Rover Sport has all that in a package that's more compact, more nimble and arguably more usable on a daily basis than its longer, taller sibling.

Mild hybrid three-litre six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines driving through an eight-speed auto ‘box provide the motive power. The Range Rover Sport SV, which is lighter and has a lower ride height gets 6D Dynamic air suspension that all but eliminates body lean when cornering, and pitching and diving when accelerating or braking to remarkable effect.

The driving position delivers a lofty view over the regular cars on the road and the ride is silky smooth. The seats are super-adjustable and the quality of the interior is as impressive as you might wish. See the latest MHH International review of this car on this page.

Best SUV Bentayga

Bentley Bentayga

We reviewed the latest incarnation of this stately SUV here. Models like the brilliant Bentley Continental GT underpin this massive, elegant SUV, now updated with a choice of a 449BHP V6 plug-in hybrid drivetrain, or a pure-petrol twin-turbo V8.

Driving the Bentley Bentayga is a surprise; one that all keen drivers will like thanks to an agility and responsiveness that belie a kerb weight roughly the same as two city cars. The S version comes as standard with rear-wheel steering and active roll management all of which enhances the body control. It really is a surprise when you consider the sheer size of this premium offering.

Volvo ES90

The Volvo ES90, a fully-fledged EV, solves the problem if refinement and an upmarket feel are your top priorities from an electric car, with the added benefit that it is one of best premium SUV’s when it comes to range. It certainly feels like a car from the class above its main executive rivals.

Redolent with a rich mix of leather, real wood and aluminium detailing merge seamlessly to give this Volvo an interior more befitting of a limousine than a conventional executive model. On the road refinement is one of the ES90’s greatest talking points. Wind and road noise are kept to a minimum making this EV ideal for longer journeys. Its broad range of driver assistance features help too, including advanced blind spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control. We reviewed it here.

Best SUV Aston DBXS

Aston Martin DBX S

Earlier this year Aston Martin announced the arrival of a new DBX flagship, the  brilliant DBX S. With the dynamic appeal of the mighty DBX707 version and an engine enhanced by technology transferred directly from the Valhalla supercar, the DBX S offers one of the most engaging and responsive driving experiences, designed to deliver even more power, reduced weight and more assertive visual appeal. With a suite of exterior and interior enhancements to match, the DBX S has its own undeniable identity.

The DBX S continues a long tradition of Aston Martin’s, utilising the ‘S’ suffix to denote a special, high-performance version of an existing model; the first being Vanquish S which we reported on a while back at MHH International. The DBX S proves that lighter variants with more power and performance are still very much part of Aston Martin’s outlook for the future. See it here.
