Duty Free Car Import for Electric Cars and Hybrid Cars Imported to Mauritius

The 2023 – 2024 budget for Mauritius has been published recently. During his recent finance speech, Finance Minister Dr Renganaden Padayachy, announced their intention to allow electric and hybrid vehicles to be imported to Mauritius duty free for a further year.

The policy applies to all electric and hybrid vehicles imported to Mauritius including cars, vans, trucks and pickups. The policy will be in place until 30th June 2024. The intent of the policy is to promote the transition away from fossil fuels and into renewable energy vehicles. The removal of import duties on electric vehicles (EVs) is one the fastest ways to make EVs more affordable in Mauritius. Mauritius and Rwanda are currently pioneering this in Africa. Ecologists are pushing for the leading African economies such as Kenya, South Africa, Zimbabwe to also adopt the policy for their countries.

Since it’s introduction, we have noticed a significant switch towards the import of electric and hybrid cars to Mauritius. Amongst the most popular EVs are the Audi, BMW, Jaguar , Land Rover and Mercedes.
