German car maker Volkswagen (VW) have announced a new full size sport utility vehicle (SUV) with five or optionally seven seats. Positioned between the mighty and premium quality Touareg and the mid-sized Tiguan, this new car is powered by a choice of hybrid, diesel or petrol options, proving there’s still life in internal combustion engine technology yet.

About The Tayron

This is a big and purposeful car: Measuring almost five metres in length, the Tayron is characterised by a clear and striking SUV design. At the front, LED headlights and the standard illuminated Volkswagen badge create an unmistakeable light signature as night falls. The same applies at the rear with its full-length LED crossbar and illuminated Volkswagen logo. Sharply drawn lines emphasise the premium feel of the Tayron and its elongated silhouette.

The styling is also reflected on the inside. The typically high-quality Volkswagen interior design is dominated by surfaces with a pleasant feel and, depending on equipment, modern and stylish materials such as ‘ArtVelours Eco3’ (A microfibre material as we understand it, but who comes up with these names?) and real open-pore wood as well as illuminated decorative trim.

Packed With Equipment As Standard

The SUV’s entry-level package is known as the ‘Life2’ equipment line, which is followed by two top-of-the-range packages: ‘Elegance2/4’ and ‘R-Line2’. As the entry-level version, the ‘Life’ version of the Tayron already offers a wide range of standard equipment. This includes nine airbags, a three-zone automatic air conditioning system, 10-colour background lighting, a multi-functional ‘driving experience control’, which we learn controls the driving profiles including all-wheel drive profiles for 4MOTION 4x4 variants.

If that’s not enough tech then also standard are ‘plus audio’ volume and pre-programmed lighting and audio moods, an infotainment system with a versatile navigation function and App-Connect Wireless (for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto), digital instruments, LED headlights including automatic main beam control (Light Assist), illuminated Volkswagen logo at the front and rear, 3D tail light clusters, sun blinds in the rear doors, as well as 17 inch alloy wheels or 18 inch wheels. That’s quite a list for an entry level version. Clearly, the next levels are even more well specified.

The dashboard is unique to the Tayron coming as it does with a curved wing feature under the black-panel dash front that’s familiar from other models from the German brand. This is joined by an array of screens including a fifteen inch touchscreen, digital driver’s display and a solitary knob on the centre console that can be customised to control everything from the volume, to the interior lighting and drive mode.

Driver Assists & Options

The Tayron ‘Life’s’ standard assist systems include adaptive cruise control, the oncoming vehicle braking when turning function, lane change system), lane keeping system, an automatic emergency braking system including pedestrian and cyclist monitoring (‘Front Assist’), ‘Park Assist Plus, rear view camera system, dynamic road sign display and the new exit warning system. As an extension of the lane change system, the latter can – within the system limits – prevent one of the doors from being opened if another road user approaches from behind. Comprehensive indeed. The world has certainly moved on from standard ABS brakes and wing mirrors.

Optional highlights on this new model include systems such as the adaptive chassis control, HD matrix headlights with interactive lighting functions and, among many other things, a tilting and sliding panoramic sunroof, a 700-Watt sound system from Harman-Kardon, leather upholstery with electrically adjustable seats including a massage and ventilation function, plus an electrically activated child safety lock for the rear.

On The Road

In the VW Tayron, five passengers can enjoy up to 885 litres of luggage space for travelling, say, on holiday with an extra two seats at the expense of boot (trunk) space of course, optionally, although there will still be 345 litres of useable luggage space. A total of seven efficient drive systems to suit all purposes will be available over time.

The range includes two next-generation plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. They can achieve electric ranges of more than 100 km and long journeys with up to 850 km between two refuelling stops. Also available are two turbo-charged petrol engines and two turbo-charged diesel engines. All drive systems are coupled to an automatic direct-shift gearbox and of course all-wheel drive will be available on some versions.

In addition, with the ability to tow up to 2.5 tonnes, the Tayron is a stylish yet well-equipped towing vehicle for trailers of all shapes and sizes. Thanks to the ‘Trailer Assist’ manoeuvring assist system, which comes as standard in conjunction with the towing bracket (folding), even large horse boxes or boat trailers are easy to handle. This car is a complete family or business package.
