The Porsche 911 is what it is: An enduring sports car; an object of total automotive desire. For most drivers, almost any version will do quite nicely but Porsche being Porsche, they feel the need to make sure that every customer is catered for in a niche-friendly way. Hence the re-launch of the 911 Carrera S model.
Within the premium Carrera model line-up, this new version closes the gap between the standard 911 Carrera and the even more performance-oriented 911 Carrera GTS T-Hybrid (of which more below). The model’s power-train has been significantly upgraded and now achieves performance levels that were previously reserved for the 911 Carrera GTS of the previous generation. In addition, an extended list of standard equipment and significantly increased customisation options compared to the 911 Carrera make it an attractive new member of the Porsche Carrera model family. The sports car is available in Coupé and Cabriolet versions. Please form an orderly queue. There seems little point in describing the exterior of this fine car; it is, as mentioned, a 911 so everyone already knows what it looks like. Our images tell all.
The Drive
The iconic 3.0 litre twin-turbo six-cylinder boxer engine has been fundamentally upgraded for use in the new 911 Carrera S. The result is a significant increase in power with a simultaneous reduction in emissions. Its output of 473bhp (353 kW / 480 PS), with 530 Nm of torque, represents an increase of 29.59bhp (30 PS) compared to its predecessor. To achieve this increased performance and efficiency, the German prestige car maker have fitted new turbochargers and have extensively optimised the ‘charge-air’ cooling, among other things. The new sports car is now based on the design of the 911 Turbo models of the previous generation. The Carrera S Coupé accelerates from zero to 62mph (100 km/h) in a lively 3.3 seconds and reaches a top speed of 191 mph (308 km/h). An eight-speed Porsche dual-clutch transmission (PDK) transmits all that power to the wheels.
On The Inside
As ever with this premium brand, exacting standards of quality and exclusivity in the Carrera S are equally evident inside the car. It comes with a leather package in Black as standard. Seats, headrests, dashboard, door panels and the optional rear seat system in the Coupé variant are trimmed with smooth-finish leather. As with the other Carrera models, the folding rear seats are available at no additional charge as an alternative to the standard two-seater layout. The Cabriolet is equipped with a rear seat system.
An option with even more extensive use of leather is also available, covering large areas of the interior – including the glove box lid, the side panels and the seat base. Throughout, the Carrera S benefits from the upgraded standard equipment found in the entire model series. This includes elements such as’ Matrix LED’ headlights and a wireless smartphone charger. Options include a lift system for the front axle, the innovative ‘HD-Matrix LED’ headlights and the Sport Chrono package including the Porsche Track Precision app, which is ideal for track day aficionados.
The 911 Carrera GTS T-Hybrid
In the unlikely event that Porsche fans will find the power of the new Carrera S a little lacking then the next model up has to be the Hybrid. This differs thanks to a design that includes an electric motor that sits between the compressor and turbine wheel. It is connected directly to the turbine shaft and can bring it up to speed in an instant, regardless of engine speed or load. This makes a significant contribution to the performance and efficiency of the drive system while achieving low emissions.
The electric motor drastically shortens the time required for the turbo to spool up, meaning that the full boost pressure is consistently available within a very short time. This ensures that the (in this case) 3.6 litre boxer engine maintains the ideal air-fuel mixture ratio and still builds up torque quickly. It responds instantly in all driving situations and offers linear power delivery. Even at an engine speed of 1,500 rpm, a system torque output of 500 Nm is produced, and the full torque of 610 Nm is even available from less than 2,000 rpm. That’s real pulling power.
The ‘eTurbo’ is designed so that the integrated electric motor can both deliver torque to the turbocharger shaft and generate electrical power from its rotation. As a generator, it produces up to 11 kW of electrical power. It uses this energy to feed the electric motor in the Porsche dual clutch transmission (PDK) or to charge the high-voltage battery. With its responsiveness and performance capability, the ‘eTurbo’ makes it possible to dispense with the second turbocharger. The ‘eTurbo’ is positioned on the right behind the boxer engine. New exhaust manifolds guide the exhaust gases to it from both cylinder banks. The corresponding charge-air cooler is located above the boxer engine. It receives its cooling air through the grilles in the rear lid. Compared to its predecessor, Porsche engineers were able to increase the efficiency of the cooler.
