It’s good news for BMW fans as the premium German car maker has just introduced a new version of their rather unique ‘sports activity vehicle’ (SAV), the iX. It’s a sort of cross between a regular estate car (station wagon) and a regular SUV. The sporty design is really quite striking and includes cutting-edge technology within plus electrified drive that offers an increased system power output and a significant boost in range up to 426 miles on a single charge, depending upon circumstances.

With an electric motor on both the front and rear axle, all model variants of the new BMW iX feature electric all-wheel-drive. The drive system has been fine-tuned, they say, to deliver noticeably more power. The iX xDrive45 delivers a system output of 408hp which is 82hp more than the xDrive40 model. Both versions manage the 0-62 mph sprint in under six seconds. The xDrive 50 is quicker still while the yet more powerful BMW iX xDrive60 puts out 544hp, enabling a 0-62 mph acceleration of 4.6 seconds. So, despite being a practical all-round car, it still retains the renowned BMW driving characteristics.

On The Outside

The new BMW iX electric vehicle (EV) exudes a combination of imposing styling and characteristic SAV proportions. Clearly-defined surfaces create a distinctive appearance that radiates the prestige nature of this car. A selection of no less than seven new exterior paint finishes are available with this latest iteration, while the BMW ‘Individual Exterior Line’ Titanium Bronze can also be selected as an option for the xDrive45 and xDrive60 model variants to provide further personalisation.

At the front is a redesigned and larger BMW kidney grille embellished with vertical and horizontal lines and bordered by a slim frame, which for the first time can be illuminated with the optionally-available BMW ‘Iconic Glow’ (standard for the range-topping BMW iX M70 xDrive). This design language carries across into the Adaptive LED headlights with new vertical elements for the daytime running lights and turn indicators as well as diagonal lines within the headlight enclosure. An interesting additional new feature of the headlights is ‘City Light’ technology, which intuitively lights both the pavement and road ahead in urban environments.

The revised M Sport trim gives the new BMW iX a particularly sporty appearance, introducing new design features including a sculpted front bumper and rear diffuser finished in high-gloss black. Add to that powerful lines, large air intakes at the front and vertical reflectors at the rear and the whole gives the vehicle a strong appearance. Darkened M Shadow Line headlights and tail-lights are now available as part of the M Sport Pro package and are standard for the BMW iX M70 xDrive. This range-topping model is equipped with the M Sport trim and M Sport Pro package as standard and additionally features a model-specific BMW kidney grille adorned with the M logo, black exterior mirror caps and exclusive twenty-two inch M light-alloy wheels.

21 and 22 inch diameter M light-alloy wheels are available in four new designs as part of the revised M Sport trim, M Sport Pro package or as standard on the BMW iX M70 xDrive. An additional set of 23-inch light-alloy wheels can be specified and are unique in this competitive environment. A nice new touch is that the 22 and 23 inch wheels are combined with tyres featuring integrated foam absorbers for improved noise insulation.

On The Inside

The interior ambience of the iX is characterised by generous space, contemporary design elements and luxury trim which can now be elevated with the modern design features of the newly revised M Sport trim. This desirable trim level brings new M multifunction seats, finished in Alcantara/Sensatec or natural leather as an option, which offer enhanced lateral support and a striking new design. M Sport customers additionally benefit from a three-spoke M leather steering wheel, ‘Dark Silver’ trim finishers, an anthracite headlining, M-specific pedals and a high-gloss black centre console.

As standard, this SAV comes packed with a host of special equipment including, but by no means limited to, Adaptive LED headlights, Comfort Access, heated seats for driver and front passenger, a heated steering wheel, ‘Driving Assistant Plus’ and four-way climate control. The BMW ‘Live Cockpit Professional’ with Head-up Display and the Harman Kardon Surround Sound System are also available with the standard model. Customers choosing the BMW iX M70 xDrive receive additional standard features, including Integral Active Steering, Adaptive two-axle Air Suspension, BMW ‘Iconic Glow’ kidney grille, the M Sport Pro package and sun-protection glass.

The Drive

This fully-electric car offers a chassis and suspension setup that is pure BMW specifically tailored to the increased performance of the drive system and the changed weight balance resulting from the new high-voltage battery technology. A hydraulic rear axle support bearing helps to create an optimum balance of sporty driving dynamics and ride comfort.

Optimised pre-conditioning of the high-voltage battery and heating of the storage system using the heat pump from the vehicle's air-conditioning system contribute towards particularly efficient charging times. In addition, the charging current control system has been further developed in order to make the best possible use of higher charging capacities.

This new BMW now delivers an improved user experience during route planning augmented by optimised charging. Thanks to an intuitive user interface, customers can enter their destination in advance via the ‘My BMW’ App, as well as their preferred departure and arrival times and any desired charging stops. The route suggested by the BMW Maps navigation system can then be customised to include charging stations. Preferred charging station providers and the desired charging status upon arrival can be inputted just as conveniently. In an optimised route view, the driver is provided with precise information about the availability of charging stations, the required charging time and the impact this will have on their expected arrival time. The costs for charging and the infrastructure in the vicinity of the respective charging station are also outlined within this view. This technology is really moving forward.
