New car import duty for Kenya

Car buyers in Kenya have seen import duties increase to 35% from early July. The East African Community (EAC) approved an application by Kenya to raise duties on motor vehicles under the common external tariff. The increase in import duty on cars has increased from 25% to 35% from 1st July 2023. The increase applies to imported cars including vehicles carrying 10 or more passengers, station wagons, racing cars and commercial vehicles which transport goods.

Updates to our KRA Duty Calculator

Our KRA duty calculator for Kenya has been updated to incorporate the new car import duty rates in the calculation. You can be confident that the calculator is correct for the prestige cars it is calculating. The CRSP has remained the same. It is simply the import duty rate which has been affected.

We strongly advise that you carefully cross check any duty calculations which are provided for you via professionals or online duty calculators to be sure they have been calculated correctly with the new tariffs. In our experience, there is usually a delay in online calculators being updated to match the new rates, so we advise caution whilst the market adjusts to the new duties. If you are seeking reassurance then get in touch with us and we’ll be happy to help you calculate your duties for your car correctly.
