About The New 2 Series

The new model is larger than its predecessor with a wider track. A mix of materials minimises the body’s weight while enhancing rigidity and safety. The aluminium bonnet for example reduces weight at the front while lightweight plastic door supports and lightweight wheels add further weight savings.

The ever present iconic BMW kidney grille remains, which now has a radar sensor for the optional driver assistance systems integrated into the central section. Full LED headlights as standard gives a fresh front end face. Adaptive LED headlights are available as an option (standard on the M Sport models), include a cornering light function, non-dazzling matrix high beam, urban lights, a motorway beam pattern and bad weather light. That should cover most lighting scenarios.

When viewed from the side raked windscreen pillars, and slim rear C-pillars not only increase the visual appeal of this model but also improve all-round visibility.

Specifications

This new BMW will be offered in a choice of Sport, Luxury and M Sport specifications. Sport includes 17” alloy wheels, Sport seats with anthracite cloth upholstery, LED headlights, and parking assistance with reversing camera and Distance Control as standard. Luxury cars feature 17” V-Spoke alloy wheels, Vernasca leather upholstery, and heated front seats. Finally, the M Sport package introduces a distinctive front apron design, 18” Bi-colour alloy wheels, Adaptive M Sport suspension, Adaptive LED headlights, folding exterior mirrors, Sport seats with Alcantara/Sensatec upholstery, Luxury Instrument Panel, heated seats, Comfort Access, and wireless charging. That’s a pretty comprehensive list but more options are available too.

On The Inside

The new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer offers improved headroom over the previous model. Shoulder and elbow room in both rows of seats is also better. Rear seat passengers also enjoy a noticeable increase in knee space. Newly-developed seats provide improved long-distance comfort and enhanced lateral support. Cloth upholstery is standard on Sport models with perforated Sensatec as an option. Vernasca leather and Alcantara/Sensatec are featured on Luxury and M Sport models respectively. Seat heating can be specified as an option for Sport models, as can 6-way electric adjustment with memory, lumbar support and massage function for all models.

Technology takes another big step forward with a host of improvements, like the cloud-based BMW Maps navigation system, which is part of the standard fitment BMW Live Cockpit Plus. This offers enhanced performance and accuracy along with a simplified method of destination entry. With ‘Connected Parking’, BMW Maps is also able to provide assistance when searching for a parking space close to the destination. The interior and technology enhancements are considerable; check with MHH International for more details about this new model.

The Power

Mild hybrid technology as ever now enables the BMW 223i and 220i Active Tourer models to deliver improved driving dynamics and optimised efficiency. The 48V electric motor acts as a starter generator and power booster for the engine and is now integrated into a new version of the seven-speed Steptronic dual-clutch transmission. It delivers an extra 19hp when pulling away from a standstill, or during mid-range acceleration. The starter generator enhances the smoothness of the Auto Start Stop function, with the energy required stored in a 48V battery located underneath the boot, charged by recuperation during overrun and braking.

Plug-in hybrid technology is expected to join the range from summer 2022 with the BMW 230e xDrive and 225e xDrive Active Tourer. The fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology consists of an electric motor installed in a single housing along with the power electronics and transmission plus the latest battery and charging technology. In both models, the electric motor acts on the rear wheels while a three-cylinder petrol engine drives the front wheels. With the aid of an intelligent power-train management system that delivers directional stability and traction in all driving situations. Regular diesel and petrol engines continue to be available but the hybrids look like the real deal. The 2 Series Active Tourer will be available in 2022 and prices will start around the £32,000 mark in the UK.
