German car maker Audi has embarked on the next chapter in the success story of this premium SUV sitting squarely in the mid-size class for vehicles of this type. Introduced here, we have the Audi Q5 SUV e-hybrid quattro and, a sleeker choice, the Audi Q5 ‘Sportback’ e-hybrid quattro. These cars are plug-in hybrid models bringing all the well-known advantages of an SUV to the road; that is to say, space, versatility, suitability for everyday use, quattro all-wheel-drive, plus a stylish new look.

The e-Power

With a heightened design language, state-of-the-art combustion-engine technology and a new operating concept evidencing this new generation, the Q5 e-hybrid delivers an output of 295BHP (299PS / 220 kW) in total and an electric range of up to 62 miles. This new hybrid model in either body-style guise combines a sporty, comfortable driving experience with a balanced blend of performance and efficiency.

The new Audi Q5 SUV e-hybrid quattro (regular or ‘Sportback’) are driven by a 2.0 petrol TFSI engine which combined with the electric motor for the total output of 295BHP and 0-62mph is possible in just 6.2 seconds with a top speed of 155 miles per hour. Drive is through a seven-speed dual clutch transmission. The electrified dual-clutch transmission in conjunction with the ‘quattro ultra drive’ ensures a sporty yet comfortable driving experience.

This power is thanks to the high-voltage battery, whose cells in the Q5 e-hybrid are arranged on two levels, one on top of the other. No doubt there’s a good reason for this; presumably space-saving. Audi has boosted the battery’s capacity to 25.9kWh (net 20.7kWh), roughly forty-five percent higher than its predecessor. Maximum AC charging power is 11kW. If the battery is completely empty, it takes 2.5 hours to charge it to 100 percent. Torque peaks at 450Nm.

Two operating modes are available: ‘EV’ and ‘Hybrid’. Stating the obvious, in EV mode, the SUV and Sportback run exclusively on electric power. When driving in hybrid mode, the hybrid management system maintains a specific charge level as needed in order to save enough electrical energy for later use. In addition to the automatic hybrid mode, the desired charge level can now be individually selected for the first time using a digital slider, which makes sense.

Audi has also significantly increased the regenerative braking performance. The degree of thrust recuperation in EV mode can be adjusted to three different levels using paddles on the steering wheel. The vehicle recovers energy automatically when this function is activated. This is based on route data stored in the navigation system. The cars can also recover energy automatically without active route guidance. The hybrid management system of the new models is designed for efficiency, flexibility and maximum creature comforts and automatically selects the optimal operating strategy.

A New Standard

The Q5 e-hybrid models stand out above the mainstream opposition with their upgraded standard equipment, which includes the ‘S sports’ suspension, 19 inch alloy wheels, LED headlights plus LED rear lights ‘pro’ as standard. Inside, the ‘MMI (multi-mode interface) experience plus’ infotainment system has a 14.5 inch central touchscreen and 11.9 inch Virtual Cockpit (for the driver) which also comes as standard and is equipped with the Audi Application Store, a smartphone interface, and the Audi sound system.

Like the combustion-engine models in the Q5 range, the Audi Q5 e-hybrid models have also significantly improved key attributes and offer a comfortable feeling of space, something that is noticeable right from the moment passengers get into the car. The fully adjustable rear seat bench is part of the standard equipment of the plug-in hybrid models. It can be moved lengthwise and its angle tilted, increasing the boot volume or comfort for rear passengers as required. At the same time, the rear bench seats three people comfortably. The SUV has a boot (trunk) volume of 438 litres. The ‘Sportback’ version offers slightly less at 433 litres of storage space. With the rear seats folded down, the volume increases to up to 1,358 litres in the SUV and 1,300 litres in the ‘Sportback’.

Other practical features include a larger storage compartment under the centre armrest compared to the previous model and numerous smaller storage areas for sunglasses, keys and other everyday items plus a cooled inductive charging tray with 15 Watts of charging power in the front centre console as well as two USB-C ports in the front and two in the rear. Available with the ‘Sound and Vision’ pack, the USB ports in the front support charging capacities of up to 60 Watts; the rear ports even support charging capacities of up to 100 Watts. This means that larger devices such as laptops can be safely powered and charged while driving.

The Audi Q5 has been around for a while now and this latest 2025 version moves the benchmark higher than ever. Hybrid cars, plug-in or self-charging are popular as they give virtually no emissions in electric-only running, ideal around town or on the dreaded school run. Out on the open road, the combines system ensures excellent fuel economy. The best of both worlds, you might say.
