Prestige motoring takes another step forward with the new EQS electric car. The German car maker are, it seems, very proud of what they have achieved with this vehicle. It is a completely new car, yet it still bears all the design elements of the regular Mercedes-Benz range.
Sustainable Build Quality
Mercedes-Benz is working on offering a carbon-neutral new car fleet within 20 years. By as early as 2030, they say, the company wants more than half the cars it sells to feature electric drive systems, including fully electric vehicles, like the featured EQS, and plug-in hybrids. The new EQS is designed to be sustainable. The vehicles are produced in a carbon-neutral manner, and resource-saving materials such as carpets made from recycled yarn are used.
Car & Drive
On the understanding that this is an expensive car, (It’s the new flagship of the Mercedes-Benz battery electric vehicle line-up. There are other models in the Mercedes EQ range), it should be expected that range should not be the issue it once was. Mercedes claim that the 333hp (equivalent) EQS, driven appropriately, should deliver up to 453 miles from its 107.8 kWh lithium-ion battery.
The battery features a 200kW DC on-board charger, allowing it to charge from 10 to 80 per cent in just 31 minutes. This is enough to deliver an extra 186 miles of range in just 15 minutes. For even the longest journey, this is starting to make sense. It is also the first Mercedes-Benz model to use the all-new modular platform architecture designed expressly for large luxury and executive-class electric vehicles.
EQS 450+ AMG Line models come as standard with 20” alloy wheels; AMG Line body styling elements in high-gloss black and chrome and 4.5° rear-axle steering. AMG Line Premium adds 21” AMG multi-spoke alloy wheels; lighting additions, acoustic privacy glass and a 360-degree camera.
On The Inside
This is a showcase model and it features the innovative MBUX ‘Hyperscreen’ with multiple displays that merge seamlessly under one piece of glass to create a wide, curved screen. This very desirable feature is available on AMG Line Premium models and above at extra cost, inevitably.
Options for the interior abound. A panoramic sunroof; full leather upholstery; heated seats front and rear; a flat-bottomed sports steering wheel in Nappa leather, the list goes on although some features are model dependent.
If the ‘Hyperscreen’ is not a requirement, although it is hard to see why not, there’s a more familiar 12.3” driver display plus a MBUX multimedia system with 12.8” OLED central display. Augmented navigation and a Driving Assistance Package are also available. Beyond Premium versions come Luxury models which feature all manner of extras like front and rear massage seats and climate control with an ‘air balance’ package. There is so much new technology here that it is like meeting the future now.
A Step Forward?
This car has only just been released but early reports are positive. The new Mercedes EQS is an exciting advance in EV motoring. It is luxurious and futuristic, yet retains the familiar Mercedes-Benz look. Whether or not that big mileage figure will prove accurate with real-world driving remains to be seen but even so, for most journeys this is another pointer to our electric automotive future.
