Earlier last year we introduced you to the Jeep Avenger (see it here), the iconic brand’s latest addition to their popular range of off-road style vehicles and a car that proved to be an instant hit. Now there’s a newer, fully off-road ready version as we introduce the Jeep Avenger 4xe.
Building upon the genuine international acclaim awarded to the Avenger since its launch, this latest addition to the range completes the line-up. Dedicated to embracing electrification, the Avenger 4xe, a hybrid, enhances off-road fun and all-weather drive-ability with it’s own unique style.
A New Avenger
The Avenger 4xe has been engineered to appeal to all you outdoor types; those ‘open air’ enthusiasts who love and practice adventurous pursuits. It’s for drivers who would never give up the additional traction and safety provided by the all-wheel-drive and also for the urban customers who need a compact car during the working week but love outdoor escapades at the weekend. It’s a very modern design that stands out from the crowd of regular sport utility vehicles (SUV).
It looks like a proper Jeep too, blending tradition with a flair for innovation. It takes the legendary functional design to the next level with a dedicated exterior engineered to not only stand out but also to better cater to off-roading requirements. This includes assets like the rear tow-hook, standard roof bars to enhance load capacity for carrying equipment such as kayaks and rafting gear, plus seats made from a durable material that is completely waterproof. Additionally, these seats are protected by an easy-to-clean solution that guards against stains and mud.
The design of the Avenger 4xe prioritises the vehicle's protection. At first glance, the refreshed exterior elements immediately catch the eye; details like the redesigned fog lights positioned slightly higher and outward, thereby enhancing the vehicle's nighttime visibility. The roof rails and rear tow hook are also designed to complement the vehicle's rugged looks.
Front and rear bumpers are made in mould-in-colour material with anti-scratch finishing, while at the front the new bumper (fender) further exposes the wheel, offering safety and solidity in rocky terrain, featuring a higher and more prominent cladding protecting the number plate from impact.
Additionally, vital components such as the front lower grille and the radar are protected by the robust bumper, ensuring durability and longevity in rugged environments. The Jeep Avenger 4xe also features a new optional bonnet sticker, made of matt material, to prevent reflections from the sun while driving, an item that is surprisingly effective. Meanwhile, standard Mud+Snow tyres provide reliable traction in various weather conditions, with optional All Terrain 3PMSF tyres available for enhanced grip on challenging terrain. The alloys are also black, ensuring adherence to the brand’s aesthetic quality over time regardless of the terrain and driving contexts in which it is used.
With improved off-road angles boasting a 22-degree approach, 21-degree ramp break-over, and 35-degree departure angles, the Avenger 4xe also has a heightened ground clearance of 210 mm. With a water fording capability increased to 400 mm, the Avenger 4xe empowers drivers to conquer even the most challenging terrains with confidence.
Business As Usual Inside
Step inside, and the Avenger 4xe continues to impress with a host of innovative features designed to elevate comfort and convenience while still retaining that rugged durability for which the company is known. The new seats are crafted from unconventional, completely washable and durable materials, perfect for adventurers who embrace the great outdoors or everyday life. And Underneath, Some New Technology
The legendary Jeep capability takes a significant leap forward with the introduction of an innovative new power-train in the Avenger 4xe, setting a new standard for fun and lightweight design. This power-train seamlessly merges the advantages of a hybrid system with cutting-edge AWD technology. At its core lies a dynamic 48-volt hybrid system, featuring a 1.2 litre turbo engine generating 136bhp, augmented by dual 21Kw electric motors positioned both at the front and rear of the vehicle. Paired with an automatic 6-speed dual-clutch transmission, this configuration not only amplifies the fun performance that Jeep enthusiasts crave but also introduces a heightened level of enjoyment through an ‘E-Boost’ function in Sport Mode.
The Jeep Avenger 4xe is equipped with a smart all-wheel-drive system, ensuring that 4x4 capability is always available when required. At low speeds (less than 19mph), traction on all four wheels is permanent, with a 50:50 split. Between 19 and 56 mph (30 to 90 km/h), the rear axle drive activates only upon demand.
Even with zero Nm of torque, the rear e-motor remains connected to the rear wheels for sudden needs. When all-wheel-drive is engaged, torque distribution is based on actual demand, with a potential split of up to 50:50. At high speeds above 56 mph (90 km/h), front-wheel drive becomes permanent, and the rear e-motor disengages from the axle to minimise fuel consumption.
The power set-up sets a new benchmark in the Avenger hybrid line-up with an output of 136bhp and an enormous claimed 1,900 Nm (1400 lb/ft) of torque, more of both than the e-Hybrid FWD version. This results in faster acceleration from zero to 62 mph (100 km/h) in just 9.5 seconds and a higher top speed, while maintaining a minimal increase in CO2 emissions. All that torque needs taming, so there’s a 22.7:1 reducer placed on the rear axle, which ensures that the extraordinary rear wheel torque provides unparalleled traction. This capability allows for conquering slopes of nearly 40% on challenging terrains such as gravel, and up to 20% when there's no grip on the front axle.
This robust performance effortlessly marries power with eco-consciousness, thanks to the coupling of all-wheel drive with hybrid technology, making it possible to reduce consumption and emissions. The features and performance of the power-train elevate the capabilities of the Avenger 4xe to new heights. Even considering that the earlier front-wheel-drive model was already unrivalled in its class, enhancements include improved off-road angles, a 10 mm increase in ground clearance, and the ability to ford up to 400 mm of water.
