The New Audi A6 Allroad: Talent & Practicality

The A6 ‘allroad’ (yes, that is the correct spelling; don’t blame the writer) from prestige German car maker Audi has always been an icon in the brand’s premium line-up, always embodying a clear philosophy: It’s an Audi that is exceptionally comfortable for everyday use while also being a car that displays its off-road capabilities when the terrain becomes more challenging. This, incidentally, is made possible by the vehicle’s specific adaptive air suspension with variable ground clearance, all-wheel steering and quattro all-wheel drive. Combined with electrified drives, the A6 allroad is the ideal companion for drivers who don’t need to plan their free time freedom, but simply choose to hit the road on a whim. It’s the complete ‘all road’ package.

That’s right: This new Audi allroad makes a statement. Now in its fifth generation, the all-rounder is more striking than ever. The body is wider, the wheels bigger (up to 21 inch) and the allroad-specific design elements give it an imposing presence on the road. Whether with the 3.0 litre V6 TDI diesel engine or, for the first time, as a plug-in hybrid, both power-trains are electrified for high efficiency and strong performance.

About Those Power Plants

All engines for the Audi A6 allroad are electrified and feature quattro all-wheel drive as standard to combine performance and efficiency. Available for the first time, the A6 allroad e-hybrid combines a 2.0 litre four-cylinder petrol engine and an electric motor built to deliver a total system output of 362BHP (270 kW / 367 PS) and a total torque of 500Nm. The high-voltage battery enables up to 59 miles of all-electric driving. The battery is charged by alternating current (AC) at up to 11kW; a full charge takes about two and a half hours. Regenerative braking can be adjusted in multiple increments and the hybrid management system offers an EV mode and a hybrid mode. A target battery charge level can be selected via the Audi multi-media Interface (MMI).

In the 3.0 litre V6 diesel engine with 295BHP (220 kW / 299 PS) and 580 Nm of torque, Audi combines three electrified components: the ‘MHEV plus (mild hybrid) technology with belt alternator starter and a power-train generator, as well as an electric-powered compressor for direct and fast response. As a result, the V6 TDI delivers powerful performance in every driving situation – whether pulling away, accelerating out of town, overtaking or driving on the motorway (autoroute).

A Sturdy Exterior

Longer, wider and taller than before, the Audi A6 allroad is impressively proportioned and makes the car more striking than ever, giving the model an incredibly powerful presence.

The sporty and elegant upper section draws inspiration from the clean lines of this model series. The lower section emphasises the rugged and practical personality of the off-road Avant (estate car / station wagon), as do specific design elements at the front, rear, and sides. Functional air vents behind the front wheels accentuate the car’s width even further.  

Vertical, hexagon-shaped design elements enhance the off-road look. They also accentuate the higher ground clearance of the A6 allroad, 34mm more than the standard A6 Avant (estate / station wagon) and the 16mm increase in ride height compared with its predecessor. The larger wheel diameter also contributes to this: the A6 allroad comes standard with 19-inch wheels. Diameters up to 21 inches are optionally available, always complemented by striking wheel arch trims.

Both the grille of the ‘Singleframe’ front end and those of the large side air intakes adopt the allroad-specific hexagon design, as does the insert above the distinctive diffuser. The underbody protection at the front and the rear as well as the side skirts also feature the signature allroad design. The underbody protection and the allroad-specific panels are finished in black as standard, partly in high-gloss, partly in matte. There’s a choice of modern metallic body colours too; your writer especially likes the ‘Mythos black’.

A Premium Interior

Audi always know how to make a smart and exclusive interior and there’s no exception to that rule here; it’s very nice inside. Numerous features also increase the well-being on board, including the dimmable panoramic glass roof. It further creates a sense of space, provides rear-seat passengers with a view, and allows them to switch between a light-filled interior and strong shading. The optional four-zone automatic air conditioning ensures comfort for all passengers by allowing separate temperature settings for the driver, front passenger, and the left and right rear seats. The A6 allroad can be cooled in the summer and preheated in the winter with auxiliary heating and ventilation, which can be activated on a timer via the ‘myAudi’ app or the MMI. This ensures that the perfect temperature is always present when starting an outing.

During the journey, the ambiance is enhanced by some premium technology the company likes to call ‘experience worlds’, which is a space-age way to modulate the interior lighting, sound, massage functions and climate control settings to create an invigorating, relaxing or well-balanced atmosphere, so they say.

The excellent vehicle acoustics of the new A6 allroad play a major role in ensuring a comfortable ride. In addition to improved sound insulation, more tightly sealed windows and optimised door seals ensure a more pleasant acoustic environment in the interior. This is further enhanced by optional acoustic glazing, which includes not only the front but also the rear side windows. For music fans, the optional ‘Bang & Olufsen’ premium sound system with 3D audio delivers an extraordinary listening experience. Speakers in the front seat headrests create personal surround sound and an even more immersive musical experience. They also enable exceptionally precise audio output: navigation prompts and phone calls are directed specifically to the driver.

Once the ride is over, electric door-closing assist, which is available as an option, ensures the doors shut quietly. All you have to do is let the doors fall gently into the lock mechanism. If the lock does not fully engage, the doors are automatically pulled completely closed.

Technology

With quattro all-wheel-drive and progressive four-wheel-steering this car is super-safe on the road in tricky conditions with all the very latest safety expertise you expect from this brand. The A6 allroad makes a strong impression not only on the outside and during the day, but also inside and at night. It boasts a premium interior with a high level of comfort, a digital user experience, and plenty of room for individualisation. This applies to the lighting as well as the equipment. The centrepiece is the  Audi MMI panoramic display, featuring the 11.9 inch  Audi virtual cockpit and a 14.5 inch touch display, which can be supplemented by an optional 10.9 inch passenger display.

The digital Matrix LED headlights can also be customised via the central display: There are eight digital daytime running light signatures, and the tail-light display changes in sync with them. While the headlights project the lane and orientation light and a slippery road warning onto the road surface thanks to their micro-LED module, the digital OLED rear lights 2.0 increase road safety by communicating with the surroundings.

When the ‘drive select’ assistant is activated, the Audi A6 allroad automatically selects the appropriate driving mode. Depending on road conditions and the current driving situation, the system selects ‘balanced’, ‘comfort’, or ‘dynamic’ mode. Driver selectable modes, ‘individual’ and ‘dynamic’ are also on hand. A learning function ensures that driver preferences are applied in future situations.

A standard allroad-specific indicator in the MMI touch display and in the optional head-up display provides information on the current pitch and roll angles, steering angle, and ride height. Geographic coordinates and compass heading are also displayed, so you always know where you are; even off-road.
