Say the name Jeep and the first thing that comes to mind is the great outdoors. Accordingly, Jeep style their cars as adventurous vehicles. It is certainly true that the mighty Wrangler is superb when tackling even the most rugged terrain. If good on-road manners combined with real off-road ability are a requirement then Jeep have the right cars for the job.
Jeep Design
It’s no secret that the Jeep brand as we know it today all stems from the Second World War military Willys Jeep of legend. That’s the heritage that the brand cling to over eighty years on. Some of today’s model even retain the round headlights that featured on that original car and all the company’s vehicles retain versions of the original seven-slot grille.
Jeep Cars
The above mentioned four-wheel drive Wrangler, available in long- and short-wheel-base models, is the most rugged of the model range. All versions are now fitted with a 2.0-litre 272hp final petrol engine mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. This new engine reduces emissions and improves consumption. The 4XE model adds two electric motors to give up to twenty-five miles of electric-only driving. Surprisingly perhaps, this electrification does not detract from the car’s off-road ability.
Other models in the range include the fifth generation of the Grand Cherokee, which over the past 30 years has become the most awarded SUV in history and now adds electrification in the latest version. The Grand Cherokee is designed to offer on-road refinement with Jeep’s legendary off-road capabilities and which they hope will appeal to business users as well.
Not to forget the smaller sibling, the Cherokee, the new design is ideal for the urban driver with greater comfort, connectivity, safety, convenience and protection. The off-road ability is still retained though, powered by a 2.2L turbo-diesel engine.
Other models include the Compass and the smaller Renegade helping to diversify the range without comprising on the Jeep legend. The Renegade is also hybrid based and all models will be powered in this way over the next few years. With the latest Compass model there’s plenty of contemporary technology to keep occupants safe and protected. The car also features an effective adaptive cruise control system for on-road use and Jeep’s ‘Selec-Terrain’ driving mode control for rougher terrain. The Compass makes for a great family choice.
Jeep Technology & Future Plans
The introduction of the plug-in hybrid 4XE Jeep Grand Cherokee, heralds an electrified Jeep future. They are expanding their portfolio by introducing a three-row Jeep Grand Cherokee, and establishing a foothold in the premium SUV market, with the new Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer. It’s not known yet if this new plug-in hybrid SUV will arrive in the UK after its American launch, but the company insist it will be a rival to the likes of the BMW X7 and the Audi Q8, so they clearly have high expectations for this new model.
The cabin of this new flagship model will feature display screens, including a 12.3” digital instrument cluster, a 12.1” central infotainment system, and even a screen for climate control. This suggest the brand is going high-tech for the future. Given the perceived market for this brand, how long will it be before Jeep is fully electric?
