BMW X6

Initially, the BMW X6 divided opinion. The image of a tough SUV with the sloping lines of a coupé left buyers uncertain. However, it has settled into its third generation now and the unique looks have resulted in successful sales; in short, it’s sporty and different and the public like it.

The Exterior

To match the looks BMW have described this car as a ‘sports activity coupé’, which seems to fit the bill. It is certainly an evolutionary design with a bold front end. The expected signature kidney-shaped grille can be the standard fit or, as a quirky extra, is also available with optional illumination. This is activated by opening or closing the car door and the driver can switch it on and off manually.

The X6 has a broad-shouldered body and a heavily curved roofline (with an option for a ‘Sky Lounge’ panoramic roof) a singular characteristic of this model. At the rear, notable features include the elongated shape of the tail lamps and the exaggerated angle of its large tailgate. Standard equipment on the entry level Sport version includes adaptive two-axle air suspension, a ‘Sport’ leather steering wheel and aluminium detailing. The M Sport model is distinct in that it features a dynamic design angle to the front and rear aprons.

Adaptive LED headlights are standard across the model range but buyers can also opt for the really rather good BMW Laserlight system that optimises the non-dazzling high beam function, the range increasing to around 500 metres. As a standard fitment, the X6 gets 19” alloy wheels on the Sport version, 21” on the M-Sport models and 22” on the range-topping M50i and M50d.

The Interior

For clients wishing to import from the UK to Kenya, New Zealand or other overseas destinations, The current model BMW X6 comes as standard with leather upholstery, while extended options from the ‘BMW Individual’ list adds Merino leather trim. The standard sports seats in the new BMW X6 are electrically adjustable and heated. Multifunction seats – with a choice of features such as seat ventilation and massage function for the driver and front passenger – can be specified as an option.

On new and used BMW X6 vehicles, buyers can be assured that everything is installed with typically impressive solidity and precision as would be expected from the German car maker. It’s functional, comfortable and attractive, too, offering an adjustable steering column and electric sports seats (with driver memory settings) to provide good long-distance comfort.

The state-of-the-art infotainment system is class-leading. It can be operated through either its 12.3” touchscreen or an intuitive rotary dial controller on the centre console. Opting for the Technology Pack adds gesture control. There’s an easy to read 12.3” digital driver display in place of the old-style analogue instruments, that looks great and again is intuitive to use.

Driving The BMW X6

On the highways and byways the X6, for an SUV class of vehicle, is surprisingly entertaining to drive, thanks in part to the standard-fit air suspension. The fortunate driver has a commanding view of the road over the chunky steering wheel. Again, for a large car, body control is impressive, weaving through sweeping corners and twisty roads with aplomb.

There’s a choice of petrol or diesel engines and, recently, mild hybrid systems have been added to all variants to improve efficiency. At the top of the tree, the X6 M50i is powered by a newly developed petrol V8, while the BMW X6 M50d features a six-cylinder in-line diesel engine and, count them, no less than four turbochargers. The BMW X6 xDrive40i and BMW X6 xDrive30d are powered by a straight-six petrol and straight-six diesel respectively, while all models come as standard with an eight-speed Steptronic transmission. Power outputs vary but the M50d rates at 400hp with an enormous torque of 760Nm at peak.

BMW’s excellent all-wheel drive set-up is standard across the range, hence the X in the name, but also available is an off-road package which adds rugged under-guard elements at the front end, two-axle air suspension and an electronically controlled rear differential lock delivering four driving modes: snow, sand, gravel or rocks. Press a button and activate the ideal settings for the vehicle’s ride height, the xDrive system, the transmission control and the DSC system’s corrective inputs. It’s as simple as that.

BMW cars are noted for their reliability so there should be no worries on the score. Models like the X6 30d are VAT-qualifying cars, meaning savings for overseas customers. Ask us here at MHH International for more detail on this.
