Nissan X-Trail

The Nissan X-Trail has been one of the mainstays of the sport utility vehicle (SUV) market for a long time now and it has achieved in that time a good reputation for reliability or longevity. It’s the largest SUV in the Nissan range with five, or optionally, seven seats. There’s a brand new version coming soon and the current model is sold out but there are still plenty of examples available as recent used cars; see the MHH International listings for details and specifications.

The Exterior

Over time, the X-Trail’s looks have not changed that much. It continues to have that sculpted and muscular styling, high wheel arches and elegant curves on the bonnet. Starting at the ‘V-motion’ grille, the headlights have either halogen units or LED’s, depending on the trim level. The Tekna version gets them as standard, for example, and that includes Nissan’s ‘Adaptive Front Lighting System’ with cornering lamps operating in conjunction with the vehicle’s speed and steering inputs. Fog lamps are standard from the ‘Acenta’ grade up, along with parking sensors.

At the rear of the new X-Trail, the revised bumper has chrome detailing and the rear lamps are now full LED, while the parking sensors are improved, as at the front of the car. N-Connecta and Tekna grades seem to be the most popular and are best featured with standard equipment.

The Interior

All models have a height-adjustable driver’s seat, as well as reach and rake adjustment for the steering wheel. The high driving position gives a good view but the parking sensors help in close quarters with obstacles. Adjustable lumbar support for the driver is standard from the base trim level upwards. The seats are comfortable with a high standard of upholstery. The X-Trail’s dashboard is clear and logically laid out, with controls placed within easy reach. Buttons and switches are all large and easy to operate while driving, and are crisp and positive in use.

Infotainment is controlled through a touchscreen and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring are standard. The screen is easy to use and, useful this, can be turned off at night to prevent driver glare, if not needed. An optional sunroof was supplied for this car and some used models may have one.

Driving The Nissan X-Trail

Despite its small capacity, the 1.3 litre engine pulls well and has no problem with keeping up with traffic. The diesel engine is stronger, but does not have the same sparkle; economy being the name of the game here.

The X-Trail is softly sprung being built for comfort rather than speed and this is reflected in the handling where there’s a little sway in corners. That said, the vast majority of buyers don’t choose this car for that reason; they prefer the comfortable cruise; great on main roads and highways.

There’s likely to be a choice of alloy wheels on used models, from 17” to 19”. Buyers who would like to import from the UK to Kenya, New Zealand or elsewhere can consider which version is right for the intended use.

Should You Buy One?

Solid and dependable are probably the best descriptions for the Nissan X-Trail. Other, similar SUV models may offer more technology or better off-road ability but sales show that this car is always popular; it does the job of transporting five or seven people and their luggage without issue. Overall, it makes for an excellent, affordable family pick.
