The Tesla Model Y Performance: More Powerful & Efficient
It’s been all quiet on the Tesla front recently as the electric vehicle (EV) market has expanded, but that doesn’t mean the famous brand has just been sitting back watching spacecraft launches. Throughout mighty Tesla’s comparatively short twenty-two year history, prestige performance vehicles have been a core part of their line-up and, over time, the Model S, Model X and Model 3 were all offered as Performance variants that set new benchmarks against even the reigning supercars. Now it’s the turn of the Model Y.
The Most Refined Model Y Ever
Tesla premium performance vehicles deliver first-class speed and handling, whilst still prioritising everyday comfort and efficiency. So when the company launched what would become the world’s bestselling car, the Model Y, a Performance variant was available and now Tesla have introduced the new Model Y Performance. This latest version builds on improvements introduced earlier last year, now featuring extensive re-engineering to maximise the power, efficiency, comfort, connectivity and safety, along with a redesigned interior and exterior.
Performance-Focused Design
In addition to the features that come standard on all Model Y vehicles, such as a panoramic glass roof with acoustic glass throughout the cabin, an eight inch second-row touchscreen, power-reclining second-row seats, ‘Autopilot’, over-the-air software updates and more, this latest Model Y Performance adds a broad range of premium upgrades and it is quite a list: For example, the front and rear fascias have been upgraded for high-speed performance and new 21 inch ‘Arachnid 2.0’ forged wheels with integrated aero covers deliver improved efficiency.
Performance red brake calipers, a powered hatch with Performance badging, puddle lamps with illuminated Performance badging when the doors are open, glossy black finishes on the front fascia, rear fascia and mirror caps and there’s more: A carbon fibre spoiler for enhanced high-speed stability, first-row Performance seats with powered thigh cushion extenders, a carbon-fibre dash and door trim inserts and for your feet, aluminium pedals.
Radical Exterior Design
These upgrades certainly give the Tesla Model Y Performance a distinct look, making it as recognisable on the road as the brand always has been while staying true to Tesla’s sleek, aerodynamic and functional signature design. The new front and rear fascias, new rear diffuser and carbon-fibre spoiler work together to create greater downforce, resulting in ten per cent less drag and 64% reduced lift for a 27% improvement overall in front-to-rear lift balance compared to earlier Model Y Performance vehicles. That’s a substantial improvement.
Designed for Maximum Performance
First launched back in 2024 with the Model 3 Performance, the latest Performance drive unit, namely the ‘Performance 4DU’ delivers 16% more peak torque, 32% more peak power and 22% more continuous power. Capable of higher thermal and performance limits than previous generations, these enhancements gives the new Model Y Performance quick acceleration and an elevated top speed without sacrificing efficiency.
Battery
With an upgraded battery pack equipped with new cells offering higher energy density without, crucially, adding weight, the latest Tesla Model Y Performance delivers 338kW (460PS / 454BHP equivalent) and accelerates from 0–60 mph in a swift 3.3 seconds reaching a top speed of 155 mph.
The prestige EV achieves a consumption of 26.07 kWh/100 mi, unlocking up to 360 miles of range, making it one of the most efficient performance electric cars available on the road today.
Also borrowed from the illustrious Model 3 Performance is a proprietary adaptive suspension technology.
The Drive
Designed in-house by the company’s own engineering and software teams and tailored specifically for the Model Y Performance, an all-new control algorithm delivers balanced ride and handling characteristics optimised for all driving scenarios. The next-generation ride controller has also been engineered to deliver a smoother, more refined ride while enhancing handling, pushing industry standards by creating an adaptive suspension system that adjusts in real-time to driver and road inputs, expanding the vehicle’s performance envelope and capability.
On the corners, the 21 inch ‘Arachnid 2.0’ Wheels, paired with new ‘staggered’ tyres, work with the adaptive suspension to provide drivers with smooth, precise control and a responsive driving experience. The tyres not only enhance handling but also deliver a more comfortable, quieter ride, again with improved range.
Further, this futuristic car benefits from upgraded chassis hardware that matches the increased performance of the power-train. New springs, stabiliser bars and bushings result in a chassis that feels more intuitive and responsive. The front suspension geometry is designed to minimise disturbances from road imperfections and provide more predictable steering. Improvements to the rear body structure increase torsional stiffness. In short, although not visually dramatic, these upgrades have refreshed the model, delivering really quick but safe driving.
Drive Modes
Extensively tested, in the manner of all models, across a variety of road types, scenarios and surfaces, Tesla have developed a cohesive package designed to deliver everyday usability while thrilling passengers with adrenaline-charged performance. From high-speed runs to dynamic driving conditions, the vehicle has undergone rigorous validation and tuning, including at the Nürburgring track in Germany, the country where the car is built, to ensure precise calibration for the diverse environments owners encounter in the real world.
The new adjustable ‘Drive Modes’ include ‘Adaptive Suspension’ plus a customisable ride and handling experience through preset damping modes thus: ‘Standard’ which offers a relaxed character with elevated comfort while remaining well-controlled and engaging to drive in all conditions. ‘Sport’, enhancing damping control for faster settling times thus strengthening connection with the road during focused driving and improving steering response while still adapting to rougher road surfaces and then ‘Stability Assist’, combining ‘Custom Traction’ and ‘Vehicle Dynamics Controls’, creating more freedom and fun for experienced drivers
The list goes on: ‘Standard’, which prioritises vehicle stability in all driving scenarios and finally ‘Reduced’ which prioritises performance and driver enjoyment by minimising traction control interventions during sporty driving. Of course, ‘Traction’ and ‘Vehicle Dynamics Controls’ remain active as safety nets if limits are exceeded. Overall, these additional settings allow for greater freedom and a more engaging driving experience. All settings are easily accessible through the famously intuitive centre touchscreen, allowing quick adjustments to vehicle dynamics.
Unique to new Model Y Performance are the first-row performance seats. Featuring enhanced side cushions and bolsters, they are designed to provide superior lateral support during dynamic driving without compromising everyday comfort. An adjustable powered thigh cushion extender ensures a perfect seating position for drivers and passengers of all sizes. Ventilation and heating come standard, working seamlessly with the climate controls.
