The Volkswagen Tiguan has long been a popular model in the German brand’s line-up and now the long-wheelbase version, the Tiguan Allspace, has been upgraded and improved. It offers a revised design and new control and assist systems and premium features.

The Interior

The Tiguan Allspace comes equipped with seven seats as standard and delivers real family-friendly practicality as a spacious and flexible three-row sport utility vehicle (SUV). It’s capacious in the back too with up to 1,755 litres of luggage space available with the two rear rows of seats folded, or an impressive 700 litres with only the rearmost two seats flat.

In addition, this roomy SUV has a number of interior upgrades to bring it in line with the latest generation of its Volkswagen stable-mates, including touch panels and sliders for the model’s standard-fit 3-zone climate control, along with controls at the back of the centre console for rear-seat passengers, and a new multifunction leather steering wheel. A simplified list of three trim levels are offered: Entry-level Life, comfort-oriented Elegance, and R-Line, which has a sportier perspective.

The Technology

Taking the Tiguan Allspace to the next level, technological highlights include new assistance systems for the driver. These include Travel Assist, which allows Level 2 auto-assisted driving at speeds of up to 130 mph (where permitted obviously), supporting the braking, steering and acceleration. LED Matrix headlights feature numerous different modes to automatically suit the driving conditions and environment, including settings for motorway, poor weather, reducing glare from signs and more.

The Power

As usual, VW offer a good choice of engines with a breadth of appeal with which the company has become synonymous. Three turbo-petrol and two turbo-diesel engines offer a range of power outputs between 148bhp and 241bhp (150 and 245 PS), while seven-speed DSG transmissions are available across all the engine options.

Further, a 6-speed manual gearbox is offered on the two entry-level, 148bhp (150 PS) power-plants (one 1.5 litre TSI and one 2.0 litre TDI). Meanwhile, four separate models benefit from Volkswagen’s acclaimed 4MOTION all-wheel drive system, including the top model from the petrol and diesel engine ranges, as well as other variants in the Tiguan Allspace family.

A new introduction to the diesel engines is ‘twin-dosing’ technology, with dual-injected AdBlue fuel additive, to significantly reduce nitrogen oxide emissions, while the 1.5 litre petrol engines feature cylinder deactivation technology to boost fuel efficiency and reduce CO² output by allowing the car to run on only two cylinders under light loads.

Comprehensive Equipment

The range of factory-fit equipment across the three Tiguan Allspace specifications is generous. Life trim features LED headlights and daytime running lights, Adaptive Cruise Control, 3-zone climate control; front and rear parking sensors and an 8.0-inch Discover navigation system. All connected, naturally, via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The base model also introduces the Digital Cockpit Pro to the model’s standard equipment list across all three specifications.

The Tiguan Allspace is yet another practical, convenient and safe SUV from Volkswagen. There’s room for all the family plus their luggage. On top of this, it has the connectivity, technology and quality to handle all the daily driving challenges, with sure-footed all-wheel drive, optionally on some models.
