The Exciting New Electric Porsche Cayenne Coupé
The Porsche Cayenne, a full size Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV), has been one of the brand’s most popular models over the last few years. Although not a sports car as such, it still retains that essence of the legendary Porsche 911; a styling characteristic that features across the prestige German car maker’s range. Now there’s an alternative model; it’s fully electric; it’s a fastback, four-door coupé and it is unquestionably gorgeous. Is this new model the Cayenne always secretly wanted to be?
The Styling
The new Porsche Cayenne Coupé models combine a commanding presence with the iconic roofline of the 911, known as the ‘flyline’ within Porsche. The coupé models differ from the SUV variants from the A-pillar back, while the windscreen has also been designed specifically for this car.
The gently sloping roofline sweeps rather elegantly over the car’s broad shoulders and gives the Cayenne Coupé a very sporting appearance. The adaptive rear spoiler blends harmoniously into the body, while the way the rear window is embedded and flush-mounted with fewer joints ensures a clean, modern look. Overall, this desirable vehicle delivers precisely drawn lines, wide proportions and high-gloss black side window strips that form a look that exudes sportiness in every detail. The premium coupé shape with its sloping roofline helps to reduce drag we’re told, which makes sense on an electric vehicle (EV). The new model’s aerodynamic ‘cd’ value is 0.23. This is a number that not so long ago would only have featured on really sleek sports cars. Helpfully, this increases the combined range of the Cayenne Coupé Electric by up to 18 kilometres to up to 416 miles (669 km), depending on the model, compared to the SUV, which is excellent on such a big car. The Porsche ‘Active Aerodynamics’ system includes features such as moving, cooling air flaps and an adaptive rear spoiler.
The Practicality
The all-electric Cayenne Coupé is the same length and width as the SUV model, but not the same height, obviously. In fact, the highest point of the car is an inch, give or take, (24mm) lower. A little can make a lot of difference. Despite its sporting lines, the coupé offers a high level of practicality, with a load volume of 534 to 1,347 litres (depending upon how the seats are configured) and a front luggage compartment that holds an additional 90 litres. The rear seating, optionally available in either a two-seat or 2+1 layout, is electrically adjustable in two ways. As with the SUV version, a tow bar with a towing capacity of up to 3.5 tonnes, is available. For customers with increased demands on the ruggedness of their car, an off-road package is also available for the Coupé.
Three EV versions will initially be available, in order: The Cayenne Coupé, the S Coupé and the Turbo Coupé. The Turbo model is featured in our images. They are all quick but it’s the last model that really delivers on power with 62MPH (100KPH) arriving in a scant 2.5 seconds with a top speed of 162MPH (260KPH). The Turbo model uses a newly developed drivetrain to develop a Ferrari 296-beating 845bhp. The boost function pushes this to 1140bhp! Even the base model cracks the five second barrier to 62 miles per hour. Porsche ‘Active Suspension Management’ is standard across the range, while rear-wheel steering is optional on all versions. Porsche’s electro-hydraulic ‘Active Ride’ suspension can be specified on the Turbo, too.
Charging
Thanks to 800-volt technology, the Cayenne Coupé Electric charges at up to 390 kW using a suitable DC fast charger and, under specific conditions, even at up to 400 kW apparently. AC charging speeds of up to 11 kW are available with the car’s standard on-board charger. One with up to 22kW is available as an optional extra. It’s a fast-charger too with ten to eighty percent charge available in just 16 minutes on a fast charger.
A Prestige Interior
The Cayenne Coupé Electric adopts the ‘Porsche Driver Experience’ found in the SUV and so offers a digital and driver-oriented operating concept. This is characterised by a generous display area including a fully digital instrument cluster, the central ‘Flow Display’, as well as a passenger display and an AR head-up display as an option.
Digital and analogue controls complement each other and they are ergonomically optimised for ease of access. With Porsche ‘Digital Interaction’, the focus is on individualisation and intuitive operation. Widgets that can be personalised, customisable display themes and the integration of third-party apps ensure a connected and individually configurable user experience.
With its panoramic glass roof, optionally offered with ‘Variable Light Control’, an electrically switchable liquid crystal film and also the ‘Sport Chrono Package’, the standard equipment of the Cayenne Coupé Electric is even more extensive than that of the SUV.
A Coupé-specific ‘Lightweight Sport’ package is also available as an option. Depending on the model, it reduces the car’s weight by up to 17.6 kg. The package includes a lightweight carbon roof, sporty carbon inserts, package-specific twenty-two inch wheels and high-performance tyres. Also inside, sporty elements feature heavily, such as the seat centre panels trimmed in classic ‘Pepita’ pattern cloth, the ‘Race-Tex’ headliner and open-pore carbon surfaces. As an option, the ‘Lightweight Sport’ package can also be combined with black leather upholstery and a 2+1 rear seat system.
Overall, this EV is a bit special. It looks fabulous and at turbo level it is one of the fastest cars on the road plus, as a bonus, it is extremely practical and capable on- and off-road. Porsche say this special model will be available to order a little later this year.
