Since 1925, a Rolls-Royce Phantom has been the premier choice of the world’s most influential luxury cars. Now, this July, we welcome the latest chapter in the story of Phantom. The new car (the word ‘car’ somehow just doesn’t seem enough) is a creation of great beauty and power.

MHH International takes an closer look at the latest Rolls Royce Phantom

This latest model is a wholly new 21st Century design interpretation of the historic Rolls-Royce Phantom DNA. It boasts an all-new aluminium architecture which will be at the heart of all future RR models and which delivers, we are told, a whole new level of the Rolls-Royce magic carpet ride. It is lighter, stiffer, quieter and more technologically advanced than ever.

Power In Silence

Power is derived from, again, an All new 6.75 litre twin-turbo V12 engine. Gone is the naturally aspirated V12 of the past. The new  engine employs two turbo-chargers that contribute to a low-end torque output of 900Nm at an incredibly low 1,700rpm whilst also delivering 563bhp of power. This combination results, say the company, in calm low speed progress a huge surge of power when the need to press on arises.

This powerplant is engaged with a Satellite Aided Transmission matched to a ZF 8-Speed gearbox, ensuring that the lucky driver is prepared for whatever the road decides to deliver.

The improved stiffness of the aluminium space-frame chassis is coupled with the latest generation of self-levelling air suspension. This makes literally millions of calculations every second as it continuously varies the electronically controlled shock absorber adjustment system, reacting to body and wheel acceleration, steering inputs and camera information. In addition, Rolls-Royce have added a stereo camera system integrated in the windscreen to see the road ahead, adjusting suspension proactively rather than reactively. In short, this is probably the most comfortable car available today.

To create ‘the most silent motor car in the world’ required huge attention to sound insulation throughout. There is 6mm of two-layer glazing all around the car. Acoustic insulation from road noise has been helped by the employment of double skin alloy on areas within the floor and bulkhead of the space-frame. This is a feature unique to the Phantom. Further noise insulation has been achieved by inserting dense foam and felt layers are between these skins to provide sound insulation unsurpassed in the car industry.

Technology Advances

Although the Rolls-Royce ethos has always been about luxury, the company has moved with the times to develop the most technologically advanced Rolls ever.  Described as a ‘central nervous system’ the technology connects and controls all the various advanced intelligence systems of the Phantom.

Some, but not all, assistance systems on-board include: Alertness Assistant, a 4-camera system with Panoramic View, all-round visibility including helicopter view (you don’t get an actual helicopter sadly), 12.3” TFT display, Night Vision and Vision Assist, Active Cruise Control, collision warning, pedestrian warning, cross-traffic warning, lane departure and lane change warning, a high-resolution head-up display, WiFi hotspot, and of course the latest navigation and entertainment systems. That’s probably enough to be going on with.

The looks speak for themselves incorporating accents of the Phantoms of old with the very latest in automotive design. Stepping aboard the New Phantom is an occasion in itself. The coach doors stand open. The only choice is whether one drives or is driven.

The interior, quoting Rolls-Royce, redefines comfort and refinement. As implied earlier, the rear and front doors can be effortlessly closed from the inside or outside.

The Best Car In The World?

Despite the futuristic interior design of the Phantom, nothing detracts from the calmness and tranquillity in this particular sanctuary of wealth. Technology remains hidden until required; spaces and surfaces are clean, the interior a display of elegance. The interior is crafted from the most precious and contemporary of materials.

There’s the largest Starlight Headliner ever seen in a Rolls-Royce. High gloss, exquisitely tactile wood panelling can be commissioned for the door interiors, centre consoles, dashboard and hidden picnic tables, whilst the seats are newly sculpted and hand-crafted to deliver even more comfort. The finest leather, obviously. It’s a Rolls-Royce so the opportunity for bespoke customisation is almost infinite.

The best possible materials in the world and peerless Rolls-Royce design and engineering marry in the new Rolls-Royce Phantom. Is it the best car in the world? Probably.
